The way to Christ by Jakob Böhme( Book )

7 editions published in 1978 in English and German and held by 943 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"'The Way to Christ' was the first published book of German mystic JACOB BOEHME (1575-1624), who received a revelatory vision in 1600 while watching a beam of sunlight reflect in a metal dish. A spiritual guide for Christians, this book contains Boehme's method for attaining enlightenment and unity with God. He offers prayers for readers to repeat and guides them through the repentance that is necessary in finding Christ. Lost souls and Christians out of touch with their faith will find Boehme's conviction and passion inspiring."--Back cover
Pietists : selected writings by Peter C Erb( Book )

16 editions published between 1981 and 2006 in English and Korean and held by 910 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although the Pietism movement was relatively brief, its long-standing influence can be seen in many aspects of our intellectual, political, and religious culture today. Originating in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, Pietism eventually affected Lutheran, Reformed, and Wesleyan churches throughout Europe and North America, forever changing the face of Christianity. Preaching, which had previously been dense theological discourse, suddenly became directed toward the moral and religious life of the people in the pews. For the first time, congregants desired to expand their spiritual lives--and devotional writing was born. The pietists' emphasis on conversion through personal religious experience and heartfelt union with Christ is still evident today in churches across the country, as is the importance of Scripture as a guide in spiritual life. This classic collection of writings from the most prominent and important Pietists is essential to understanding our history as a religious people. (back cover)
Pietists, Protestants, and mysticism : the use of late Medieval spiritual texts in the work of Gottfried Arnold (1666-1714) by Peter C Erb( Book )

6 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 261 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the beginning of pietism in 1675 its proponents and opponents have regularly insisted that the Awakening had direct ties to late medieval mysticism. The author investigates this assertion, centering attention on the life and work of Gottfried Arnold (1666-1714), the Lutheran historian, theologian, and poet, who of all the early pietists had the most wide-ranging knowledge and made the most extensive use of late medieval mystics. The book examines Arnold's use of these mystics in the context of earlier Protestant and Radical Reformers' approach to medieval mystical texts, indicating the ways in which he reshaped medieval concepts to inform his own theological perspective. - Publisher

Murder, manners, mystery : reflections on faith in contemporary detective fiction by Peter C Erb( Book )

5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Highlighting popular works by P.D. James, Colin Dexter, Ian Pears and Umberto Eco, among others, this is an intriguing examination of the treatment of religion in the genre of contemporary murder mystery novels. The other central theme examined in this book is that of justice. The narrative of any detective fiction novel depends on the murderer's ability to replace a crime with a convincingly constructed illusion of innocence, and to escape punishment by means of good manners. Erb also looks in detail at the theme of retribution in detective fiction. Can justice ever be anything more than retribution, death without hope? What satisfaction can be made for the loss of a human life? How can a murderer ever fully confess a crime and experience thanksgiving in final release from the consequences?
