The fragmented world of the social : essays in social and political philosophy by Axel Honneth( )

15 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 1,812 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The essays in this book weave together insights and arguments from such diverse traditions as German critical theory, French philosophy and social theory, and recent Anglo-American moral and political theory, offering a unique approach to the political and theoretical consequences of the modernism/postmodernism discussion. Through an analysis of central themes in classical Marxism and early critical theory, the author shows how recent work in a variety of traditions converges on the need to question familiar distinctions between material production and culture, the public and the private, and the political and the social, and to reconsider the conceptions of agency and power that have informed them
Philosophical interventions in the unfinished project of enlightenment by Axel Honneth( )

"These 11 essays by philosophers and social theorists take up the philosophical aspects of Juergen Habermas's unfinished project of reconstructing enlightenment rationality. They range in subject matter from classical problems to contemporary debates, covering historical perspectives, theoretical issues, and postenlightenment challenges. A companion volume of essays will take up the cultural and political aspects of the work."--

Freedom's right : the social foundations of democratic life by Axel Honneth( )

28 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 1,005 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The theory of justice is one of the most intensely debated areas of contemporary philosophy. Most theories of justice, however, have only attained their high level of justification at great cost. By focusing on purely normative, abstract principles, they become detached from the sphere that constitutes their "field of application"--Namely, social reality. Axel Honneth proposes a different approach. He seeks to derive the currently definitive criteria of social justice directly from the normative claims that have developed within Western liberal democratic societies. These criteria and these claims together make up what he terms "democratic ethical life": a system of morally legitimate norms that are not only legally anchored, but also institutionally established. Honneth justifies this far-reaching endeavour by demonstrating that all essential spheres of action in Western societies share a single feature, as they all claim to realize a specific aspect of individual freedom. In the spirit of Hegelʹs Philosophy of Right and guided by the theory of recognition, Honneth shows how principles of individual freedom are generated which constitute the standard of justice in various concrete social spheres: personal relationships, economic activity in the market, and the political public sphere. Honneth seeks thereby to realize a very ambitious aim: to renew the theory of justice as an analysis of society. -- Publisher description
Reification : a new look at an old idea by Axel Honneth( )

30 editions published between 2007 and 2012 in English and held by 961 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In these original and imaginative essays, delivered as the Tanner Lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2005, the distinguished third-generation Frankfurt School philosopher Axel Honneth attempts to rescue the concept of reification by recasting it in the terms of the philosophy of recognition he has been developing over the past two decades."
The struggle for recognition : the moral grammar of social conflicts by Axel Honneth( Book )

37 editions published between 1994 and 2015 in English and Spanish and held by 837 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this pathbreaking study, Axel Honneth argues that "the struggle for recognition" is, and should be, at the center of social conflicts. Moving smoothly between moral philosophy and social theory, Honneth offers insights into such issues as the social forms of recognition and nonrecognition, the moral basis of interaction in human conflicts, the relation between the recognition model and conceptions of modernity, the normative basis of social theory, and the possibility of mediating between Hegel and Kant
The critique of power : reflective stages in a critical social theory by Axel Honneth( Book )

22 editions published between 1991 and 1997 in English and held by 802 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pathologies of reason : on the legacy of critical theory by Axel Honneth( )

12 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 501 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Collected here for the first time in English, Honneth's essays pursue the unifying themes and theses that support the methodologies and thematics of critical social theory, and they address the possibilities of continuing this tradition through radically changed theoretical and social conditions. According to Honneth, there is a unity that underlies critical theory's multiple approaches: the way in which reason is both distorted and furthered in contemporary capitalist society. And while much is dead in the social and psychological doctrines of critical social theory, its central inquiries remain vitally relevant

The pathologies of individual freedom : Hegel's social theory by Axel Honneth( Book )

14 editions published between 2010 and 2016 in English and held by 293 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a penetrating reinterpretation and defense of Hegel's social theory as an alternative to reigning liberal notions of social justice. The eminent German philosopher Axel Honneth rereads Hegel's Philosophy of Right to show how it diagnoses the pathologies of the overcommitment to individual freedom that Honneth says underlies the ideas of Rawls and Habermas alike. Honneth argues that Hegel's theory contains an account of the psychological damage caused by placing too much emphasis on personal and moral freedom. Although these freedoms are crucial to the achievement of justice, they are insufficient and in themselves leave people vulnerable to loneliness, emptiness, and depression. Hegel argues that people must also find their freedom or "self-realization" through shared projects. Such projects involve the three institutions of ethical life - family, civil society, and the state - and provide the arena of a crucial third kind of freedom, which Honneth calls "communicative" freedom. A society is just only if it gives all of its members sufficient and equal opportunity to realize communicative freedom as well as personal and moral freedom."--Jacket

19 editions published between 2011 and 2015 in German and held by 254 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

27 editions published between 1985 and 2000 in German and held by 236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Das Ich im Wir : Studien zur Anerkennungstheorie by Axel Honneth( Book )

13 editions published between 2010 and 2013 in German and held by 212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

19 editions published between 2015 and 2017 in German and held by 207 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
