Benjamin's -abilities by Samuel Weber( )

20 editions published between 2008 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 2,214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

""There is no world of thought that is not a world of language," Walter Benjamin remarked, "and one only sees in the world what is preconditioned by language." In this book, Samuel Weber reveals a new and productive aspect of Benjamin's thought by focusing on a little-discussed stylistic trait in his formulation of concepts." "Weber's focus is the critical suffix "--Ability" that Benjamin so tellingly deploys in his work. The "-ability" of concepts and literary forms traverses the whole of Benjamin's oeuvre, from "impartibility" and "criticizability" through the well-known formulations of "citability," "translatability," and, most famously, the "reproducibility" of "The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility.""--Jacket

The legend of Freud by Samuel Weber( Book )

26 editions published between 1982 and 2000 in English and held by 597 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annotation "Psychoanalysis is dead!" Again and again this obituary is pronounced, with ever-increasing conviction in newspapers and scholarly journals alike. But the ghost of Freud and his thought continues to haunt those who would seal the grave. The Legend of Freud shows why psychoanalysis has remained uncanny, not just for its enemies but for its advocates and practitioners as well -- and why it continues to fascinate us. For psychoanalysis is not just a theory of psychic conflict: it is a thought in conflict with itself. Often violent, the conflicts of psychoanalysis are most productive where they remain unresolved, thus producing a text that must be read: deciphered, interpreted, rewritten. Psychoanalysis: legenda est

Unwrapping Balzac : a reading of La peau de chagrin by Samuel Weber( Book )

18 editions published between 1971 and 2019 in English and Undetermined and held by 575 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This radically new reading of La peau de charin presents a case for Balzac as a modern rather than a traditional, realist writer. Using the principles and languages of Marx, Derrida, Freud, Barthea, and others who have contributed to a redefinition of modern criticism, Samuel Weber presents a detailed and intricate explication of the text that challenges all standard interpretations of the novel. Traditional readings of La peau de chagrin, and of Balzac in general, have pursued a message in the novel, a reality beneath the allegory. Weber demonstrates that Balzac's text can be grasped both as a mise en scène and as a play of representations that reflects no original truth, reality, or meaning beneath the text to which the representation can be referred and by which they can be authenticated. To unwrap Balzac in this manner is to discover that there is no thing inside, that there is only the 'wrapping.' Weber's conclusions are not only startingly original, but they also solve problems which have puzzled traditional readers of the novel since the earliest commentators of 1831. Unwrapping Balzac is a brilliant tour de force that will create controversy among Balzac scholars for years to come
Return to Freud : Jacques Lacan's dislocation of psychoanalysis by Samuel Weber( Book )

16 editions published between 1978 and 1995 in English and German and held by 520 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Religion and media( Book )

12 editions published between 2001 and 2010 in English and held by 519 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Counter The twenty-five contributors to this volume - who include such influential thinkers as Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy, Talal Asad, and James Siegel - confront the conceptual, analytical, and empirical difficulties involved in addressing the complex relationship between religion and media. The book's introductory section offers a prolegomenon to the multiple problems raised by an interdisciplinary approach to these multifaceted phenomena. The essays in the following part provide exemplary approaches to the historical and systematic background to the study of religion and media. The third part presents case studies by anthropologists and scholars of comparative religion. The book concludes with two remarkable documents: a chapter from Theodor W. Adorno's study of the relationship between religion and media in the context of political agitation (The Psychological Technique of Martin Luther Thomas's Radio Addresses) and a section from Niklas Luhmann's monumental Die Gesellschaft der Gesellschaft (Society as a Social System)
Violence, identity, and self-determination by A. de Vries( Book )

13 editions published between 1997 and 2006 in English and Italian and held by 499 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the collapse of the bipolar system of global rivalry that dominated world politics after the Second World War, and in an age that is seeing the return of "ethnic cleansing" and "identity politics," the question of violence, in all of its multiple ramifications, imposes itself with renewed urgency. Rather than concentrating on the socioeconomic or political backgrounds of these historical changes, the contributors to this volume rethink the concept of violence, both in itself and in relation to the formation and transformation of identities, whether individual or collective, political or cultural, religious or secular. In particular, they subject the notion of self-determination to stringent scrutiny: is it to be understood as a value that excludes violence, in principle if not always in practice? Or is its relation to violence more complex and, perhaps, more sinister?" "The eighteen contributors address the concept of violence from a variety of perspectives in relation to different forms of cultural representation, and not in Western culture alone, in literature and the arts, as well as in society and politics; in philosophical discourse, psychoanalytic theory, and so-called juridical ideology, as well as in colonial and post-colonial practices and power relations."--Jacket

Mass mediauras : form, technics, media by Samuel Weber( Book )

13 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The essays and interviews that compose this book provide an excellent introduction to and overview of the thought of one of the most brilliant critical and cultural theorists of our day. They include Weber's readings of some of the central texts of critical theory - including Kant's Critique of Judgment, Heidegger's Questing after Technology, and Benjamin's Work of Art in the Age of Its Technical Reproducibility. Other essays examine the thought of Plato, Descartes, Husserl, Kafka, Joyce, and Derrida discussing questions of objectivity, translation, iterability, representation, and mass media. The essays are supplemented by interviews and discussions that range over such topics as the effects of film and television on the perception of reality, differences in reporting the Vietnam and Gulf Wars, problems of authority and authorship, the controversies over Paul de Man's wartime writings and Heidegger's political positions, the relation of the Frankfurt School to deconstruction, and generally the status of critical 'theory'
Optoelectronic devices and circuits by Samuel Weber( Book )

13 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 275 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Institution and interpretation by Samuel Weber( Book )

1 edition published in 2001 in English and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Institution and Interpretation investigates the forces that shape and limit interpretive practices. Whereas the prevailing use of the term institutions tends to reduce their role to that of maintaining the status quo, Weber suggests that institutions are never entirely free of the need to consolidate their authority through an ambivalent process of reinstituting themselves, a process in which interpretation plays a crucial role. Interpretation thus emerges not only as an activity made possible by institutions but as an essential component of their operation." "To the book's original nine essays - addressing such topics as professionalism in criticism, the relation between psychoanalysis and hermeneutics, and the contemporary situation of the humanities - this new edition adds six essays, two of which are previously unpublished. Topics discussed include the future of the university and of the humanities, Kierkegaard's notion of "repetition," Josiah Royce's conception of a "community" of interpretation, and the problematic place of reading in reader-response theory."--Jacket
