The purpose of this presentation is to discuss and describe the life and work of Dr. Walsh McDermott, who holds the Livingston Farrand chair in Public Health at the Cornell University Medical College. Dr. McDermott is interviewed by Dr. David E. Rogers, Vice President for Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University. In this presentation Dr. McDermott is first described as a clinician, researcher, trainer of young research people, and finally as one of the greatest medical statesmen operating on the social scene. Dr. McDermott and Dr. Rogers then discuss the role of medicine in the United States today. Dr. McDermott discusses the results of separating public health from the rest of medicine, and notes that although the physician today has more technology to assist him he is able to apply this knowledge to fewer people. The future of the university based medical center and the current medical education program is discussed in detail. Dr. McDermott then describes his early research in infectious diseases, and discusses his experimentation with laboratory animals and field testing with streptomycin and isoniazid. He describes the prevention and control program set up at the Navaho reservation, and discusses in detail the problems involved in delivering medicine across a language and cultural barrier to people living in primitive, rural surroundings
