The process of question answering : a computer simulation of cognition by Wendy G Lehnert( Book )

21 editions published between 1977 and 1979 in English and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Problems in computational question answering assume a new perspective when question answering is viewed as a problem in natural language processing. A theory of question answering has been proposed which relies on ideas in conceptual information processing and theories of human memory organization. This theory of question answering has been implemented in a computer program, QUALM, currently being used by two story understanding systems to complete a natural language processing system which reads stories and answers questions about what was read. The processes in QUALM are divided into 4 phases: (1) Conceptual categorization which guides subsequent processing by dictating which specific inference mechanisms and memory retrieval strategies should be invoked in the course of answering a question; (2) Inferential analysis which is responsible for understanding what the questioner really meant when a question should not be taken literally; (3) Content specification which determines how much of an answer should be returned in terms of detail and elaborations, and (4) Retrieval heuristics which do the actual digging to extract an answer from memory

The conceptual content of conversation by Roger C Schank( Book )

2 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Conversations between humans constitute a challenging task orientation for theories of natural language processing. Problems of conceptual representation, predictive understanding techniques, and the recognition of conversational continuity are especially crucial for computational models of dialogue. Significant information exchanges often lie hidden beneath the surface communications of human conversation. This paper outlines a strategy for conversational analysis that utilizes multiple levels of information flow in order to characterize the conceptual content of a conversation. The role of predictive knowledge structures and contextual information is illustrated in an analysis of a sample conversation, along with an outline of conversational rules specific to particular levels of conversational analysis. The role of object primitives in natural language processing by Wendy G Lehnert( Book )

3 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Natural language processing techniques rely in part on the use of functional knowledge about physical objects, and associative memory structure. In this paper, a representational system called Object Primitives is presented as an extension to the system of Conceptual Dependency for the purpose of representing physical objects and providing an organizing structure for associative memory. A computer program, OPUS, is described which applies this representational system to the problem of analyzing natural language sentences dealing with objects. Inferences derived from Object Primitive descriptions are made during the conceptual analysis by a system of demons, providing a framework for an integrated understanding system. (Author)
Text processing effects and recall memory by Wendy G Lehnert( Book )

2 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One current research area within the field of natural language processing is concerned with the nature of predictive understanding mechanisms that seek to interpret input in terms of knowledge-based expectations. A predictive understanding system (human or computational) builds an internal representation for narratives by generating inferences and making casual connections between the events described on the basis of these expectations. Progress in this area now makes it possible to study the various ways that processing complexity at the time of understanding affects the memory representation generated for a text. This investigation will focus on the design and implementation of process-oriented memory structures in a computer program that understands narratives. The results of these efforts will be of interest to researchers in cognitive psychology and linguistics as well as artificial intelligence
Question answering in a story understanding system by Wendy G Lehnert( Book )

2 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

BORIS -- : an experiment in in-depth understanding of narratives( Book )

2 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

BORIS is a story understanding and question answering system which involves the specification and interaction of many sources of knowledge. Unlike skimmers, which simply extract the gist of a story in a top-down manner and ignore everything else, BORIS attempts to understand everything that it reads to as great a depth as possible. This report focuses on how the BORIS program handles a complex story involving a divorce. (Author)

Memory organization and search processes for narratives by Michael George Dyer( Book )

2 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

BORIS represents the first system to integrate the knowledge-based inference techniques of scripts, plans, goals, and themes within a single narrative-understanding program. This report discusses techniques used by BORIS for memory representation and memory retrieval. Emphasis is placed on human question-answering abilities and the heuristics needed to simulate these phenomena. An example narrative processed by BORIS is discussed in detail and used to illustrate design decisions. (Author)
Affect units and narrative summarization by Wendy G Lehnert( Book )

2 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The analysis of narrative text involves various levels of description. On the lowest level are word meanings and syntactic structure within single sentences. On a higher level there are problems of generating inferences and integrating information into memory. At the highest level is the notion of a macro-structure or narrative plot. The identification of high-level narrative structures is central to the problem of narrative summarization. But the intuitive notion of a plot is useless for a process model of summarization unless we can specify the hierarchical representations that allow us to analyze input and produce plots as output. A representational strategy has been developed for high-level structural analysis in conjunction with the BORIS system (a narrative text understanding system). The structures produced effectively encode plot lines in terms of connected graph structures where graph nodes correspond to specific affect units. An affect unit is an abstraction of affective causalty which is recognized in a bottom-up manner at the time of understanding. Simple manipulations of these graph structures yield the conceptual basis for narrative summaries, but the actual process of summarization depends on certain connectivity properties in the graph structure
