Understanding global trade by Elhanan Helpman( )

17 editions published in 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,990 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Global trade is of vital interest to citizens as well as policymakers, yet it is widely misunderstood. This compact exposition of the market forces underlying international commerce addresses both of these concerned groups, as well as the needs of students and scholars. Although it contains no equations, it is almost mathematical in its elegance, precision, and power of expression. It provides a thorough explanation of what shapes the international organization of production and distribution and the resulting trade flows. It reviews the evolution of knowledge in this field from Adam Smith to today as a process of theoretical modeling, accumulation of new empirical data, and then revision of analytical frameworks in response to evidence and changing circumstances. It explains the sources of comparative advantage and how they lead countries to specialize in making products which they then sell to other countries. While foreign trade contributes to the overall welfare of a nation, it also creates winners and losers, and the author describes mechanisms through which trade affects a country's income distribution. The book provides a clear and original account of the revolutions in trade theory of the 1980s and the most recent decade. It shows how scholars shifted the analysis of trade flows from the sectoral level to the business-firm level, to elucidate the growing roles of multinational corporations, offshoring, and outsourcing in the international division of labor. The author's explanation of the latest research findings is essential for an understanding of world affairs
Innovation and growth in the global economy by Gene M Grossman( )

45 editions published between 1991 and 2001 in English and Dutch and held by 1,963 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traditional growth theory emphasizes the incentives for capital accumulation rather than technological progress. Innovation is treated as an exogenous process or a by-product of investment in machine and equipment. The authors develop a unique approach in which innovation is viewed as a deliberate outgrowth of investments in industrial research by forward-looking, profit-seeking agents

General purpose technologies and economic growth by Elhanan Helpman( )

14 editions published between 1998 and 2010 in English and held by 1,893 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study of GPTs is relatively new. A universal theoretical framework for dealing with GPTs does not yet exist. The essays in this book both further our understanding of GPT-driven economic growth and lay the foundation for further developments of the available frameworks
The mystery of economic growth by Elhanan Helpman( Book )

20 editions published between 2004 and 2010 in English and held by 1,655 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of the leading researchers of economic growth, Helpman succinctly reviews, critiques, and integrates current research - on capital accumulation, education, productivity, trade, inequality, geography, and institutions - and clarifies its relevance for global economic inequities. In particular, he points to institutions - including property rights protection, legal systems, customs, and political systems - as the key to the mystery of economic growth. Solving this mystery could lead to policies capable of setting the poorest countries on the path toward sustained growth of per capita income and all that implies."--Jacket

The organization of firms in a global economy( )

15 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 1,208 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Organization of Firms in a Global Economy presents a new research program that is transforming the study of international trade. Driven by the availability of new micro data sets and innovative theoretical models, it focuses on the level of firms, products, and stages of production rather than on countries and industries. It addresses such questions as why only a small proportion of firms in a given industry export and why an even smaller proportion invest abroad; why exporters tend to be more productive than nonexporters; why almost one-third of international trade takes place between units of the same firm and why as much as two-thirds involves multinational firms as exporter, importer, or both; and why international trade may have been the most important driver of organizational changes in the corporation that have been taking place in the last decade. Until a few years ago, models of international trade did not recognize the heterogeneity of firms and exporters, and could not provide good explanations of international production networks. Now such models exist and are explored in this volume
Market structure and foreign trade : increasing returns, imperfect competition, and the international economy by Elhanan Helpman( Book )

56 editions published between 1985 and 2002 in English and held by 1,059 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Market Structure and Foreign Trade presents a coherent theory of trade in the presence of market structures other than perfect competition. The theory it develops explains trade patterns, especially of industrial countries, and provides an integration between trade and the role of multinational enterprises. Relating current theoretical work to the main body of trade theory, Helpman and Krugman review and restate known results and also offer entirely new material on contestable markets, oligopolies, welfare, and multinational corporations, and new insights on external economies, intermediate inputs, and trade composition. Elhanan Helpman is Professor of Economics at Tel Aviv University. Paul Krugman is Professor of Economics at MIT
Special interest politics by Gene M Grossman( Book )

16 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and German and held by 728 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Theoretical book is about the mechanisms by which special interest groups affect policy in modern democracies. Defining a special interest group as any organization that takes action on behalf of an identifiable group of voters, the authors ask: How do special interest groups derive their power and influence? What determines the extent to which they are able to affect policy outcomes? What happens when groups with differing objectives compete for influence? Part I focuses on voting and elections. Part II examines the use of information as a tool for political influence. Part III deals with campaign contributions, which interest groups may use either to influence policy makers positions and actions or to help preferred candidates to win election
Handbook of international economics by Ronald Winthrop Jones( Book )

in English and held by 709 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This Handbook adopts a traditional definition of the subject, and focuses primarily on the explanation of international transactions in goods, services, and assets, and on the main domestic effects of those transactions. The first volume deals with the "real side" of international economics. It is concerned with the explanation of trade and factor flows, with their main effects on goods and factor prices, on the allocation of resources and income distribution and on economic welfare, and also with the effects on national policies designed explicitly to influence trade and factor flows. In other words, it deals chiefly with microeconomic issues and methods. The second volume deals with the "monetary side" of the subject. It is concerned with the balance of payments adjustment process under fixed exchange rates, with exchange rate determination under flexible exchange rates, and with the domestic ramifications of these phenomena. Accordingly, it deals mainly with economic issues, although microeconomic methods are frequently utilized, especially in work on expectations, asset markets, and exchange rate behavior."--Publisher's information

International R & D spillovers and institutions by David T Coe( )

26 editions published between 2005 and 2008 in English and held by 505 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The empirical analysis in "International R & D Spillovers" (Coe and Helpman, 1995) is first revisited by applying modern panel cointegration estimation techniques to an expanded data set that we have constructed for the purpose of this study. The new estimates confirm the key results reported in Coe and Helpman about the impact of domestic and foreign R & D capital stocks on TFP. In addition, we show that domestic and foreign R & D capital stocks have measurable impacts on TFP even after controlling for the impact of human capital. Furthermore, we extend the analysis to include institutional variables, such as legal origin and patent protection, in order to allow for parameter heterogeneity based on a country's institutional characteristics. The results suggest that institutional differences are important determinants of total factor productivity and that they impact the degree of R & D spillovers
Theory, policy, and dynamics in international trade : essays in honor of Ronald W. Jones by Wilfred J Ethier( Book )

30 editions published between 1993 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 458 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents a representative collection of papers on international trade, one of the most dynamic sub-fields in economics. The contributions range over all the major areas of research, including articles on the geographical aspects of international trade by Paul Krugman and Alan Deardorff, on dynamic stochastic economies by Avinash Dixit, and on endogenous growth by Gene Grossman and Elhanan Helpman. In addition to the theoretical contributions, the book also contains work on important policy issues such as auction quotas, discussed by Kala Krishna, and the role of government in economic development, by Anne Krueger. Also included is an assessment by Bill Ethier of the theoretical achievements of a leading authority in international trade theory, Ronald Jones, in whose honour the essays were written
A theory of international trade under uncertainty by Elhanan Helpman( Book )

15 editions published between 1978 and 2015 in English and held by 442 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Theory of International Trade Under Uncertainty analyzes international trade in goods and securities in the presence of uncertainty using an integrated general equilibrium framework that recognizes the dependence of markets for goods on financial markets and vice versa. The usefulness of this approach is demonstrated by means of applications to questions such as the effects of international trade on resource allocation, tariff policy, and intervention in financial capital markets. Results which are important for theoretical as well as policy oriented applications are presented.

Compr
Institutions and economic performance( Book )

8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 375 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Institutions and Economic Performance explores the question of why income per capita varies so greatly across countries. Even taking into account disparities in resources, including physical and human capital, large economic discrepancies remain across countries. Why are some societies but not others able to encourage investments in places, people, and productivity?" "The answer, the book argues, lies to a large extent in institutional differences across societies. Such institutions are wide-ranging and include formal constitutional arrangements, the role of economic and political elites, informal institutions that promote investment and knowledge transfer, and others. Two core themes run through the contributors' essays. First, what constraints do institutions place on the power of the executive to prevent it from extorting the investments and effort of other people and institutions? Second, when are productive institutions self-enforcing?"--Jacket
Monopolistic competition in trade theory by Elhanan Helpman( Book )

17 editions published between 1988 and 1990 in English and Undetermined and held by 369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Interest groups and trade policy by Gene M Grossman( Book )

8 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 368 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first three chapters focus on campaign contributions and candidate endorsements--two of the tools that interest groups use in their efforts to influence policy outcomes. The remaining chapters present applications to trade policy issues. Grossman and Helpman demonstrate how the approaches developed in their monograph can shed light on tariff formation in small and large countries, on the conduct of multilateral trade negotiations, and on the viability of bilateral free trade agreements. They also examine the forms that regional and multilateral trade agreements are likely to take and the ways in which firms invest abroad to circumvent trade barriers induced by political pressures"--Publisher's description
Social policy evaluation : an economic perspective( Book )

North-South R & D spillovers by David T Coe( Book )

29 editions published between 1994 and 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We examine the extent to which developing countries that do little, if any research and development themselves benefit from R & D that is performed in the industrial countries. By trading with an industrial country that has large 'stocks of knowledge' from its cumulative R & D activities, a developing country can boost its productivity by importing a larger variety of intermediate products and capital equipment embodying foreign knowledge, and by acquiring useful information that would otherwise be costly to obtain. Our empirical results, which are based on observations over the 1971-90 period for 77 developing countries, suggest that R & D spillovers from the industrial countries in the North to the developing countries in the South are substantial
