Today, more than ever, we live in a global world. Whether it's war, economics, politics, or law, our lives are influenced by a complex web of cross-border transactions. Dr Charles Jones ably provides the building blocks to understand these interactions, outlining the competing theories that attempt to explain them. Arguing that the strength of International Relations lies in its contradictions - it's not a single discipline but a fascinating mess of history, politics, economics, sociology, law, anthropology, and cultural studies - he provides a lively discussion of the limitations of the field, but also why it is so essential. Covering conflict, history, and theory, and with a major focus on the global economy, this is the perfect primer for aspiring students of International Relations, workers in an international context, and citizens across the globe

More than just war : narratives of the just war tradition and military life by Charles A Jones( Book )

13 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in English and held by 178 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book raises questions about the just war tradition through a critical examination of its revival and by juxtaposing it with a literary phenomenology of war. Recent public debate about war has leaned heavily on a just-war tradition dating back many centuries. This book examines the recent revival of that tradition in the United States and Britain, arguing that it is less coherent and comprehensive as an approach to the ethical issues arising from war than is generally supposed, and that it is inconsistent in important ways with the theology on which it was originally based. A second line of criticism is mounted through close readings of modern texts in English - from Britain, Australia and the USA - that together constitute a more subjective, bottom-up understanding of the moral dilemmas of military life. In this second tradition the task of representing war is seen as more problematic, and its rationality more questionable, than in just war discourse. Works by William Shakespeare, Sir Walter Scott, James Fennimore Cooper, Stephen Crane, John Buchan, Robert Louis Stevenson, Joseph Conrad, Tim O'Brien and Kurt Vonnegut are featured. The book will be of great interest to students and scholars of security studies, military studies, theology and international relations."--Publisher's website
American civilization by Charles A Jones( Book )

6 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 177 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a world that is daily becoming more American it is well to know just what being American entails. This book argues that a discernibly American identity, nonetheless real for having been so long obscured by United States preponderance, has united the republics of the Western hemisphere in the modern period and helps explain their behaviour toward one another and toward states elsewhere."--Jacket

Latin American independence : nineteenth century political and official pamphlets, from the British Library, London( Book )

3 editions published between 2002 and 2011 in Spanish and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Digitized version of microfilm collection featuring more than five-hundred pamphlets from the River Plate region. The earliest publications date from the late colonial period and progress into the post-Rosas era defined by the presidents Domingo Faustino Sarmiento and Bartolomé Mitre. Some items are official documents, others are political broadsides. This period is important in Argentine and River Plate history as the region developed from Spanish colony to an independent republic with an identity. Some documents belonged to Lorenze López, a deputy of Buenos Aires in the early Republican period. These and others were collected by the Argentinean writer Luis López Dominguez (1810-98). He was a political journalist, historian, politician and ambassador. The collection was finally acquired by the British Library in 1968

The effect of early pregnancy and lactation on the growth of young breeding animals by Charles A Jones( )

3 editions published in 1916 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of the investigation described in this thesis was to determine the effects of early breeding in swine. If breeding immature animals results in evil consequences, these bad results should be observed in one or more of three ways: (1) influences on the pregnant mother; (2) influences on her immediate offspring; and (3) influences on the race. The particular purpose of this investigation is to determine the influence of gestation and lactation upon the growth of farm animals. To determine the effect of early pregnancy and lactation on growth, is really to determine the cause of the injurious, or the beneficial effect, if it is beneficial
