Religion and identity of Soviet Jewish immigrants in the United States by Elena Demchenko( Book )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This thesis explores Soviet Jews' acculturation into American society with the focus on religion and identity. The study concentrates on the immigrant experience of twenty-four Soviet Jews who came to the United States from the 1970s up to 2008. The analysis of the interviewees' family background, professional, economic, religious, and cultural experiences in the Soviet Union and the United States shows that Soviet Jews whose age of emigration is fifty and over have failed to adjust their pre-migration cultural patterns in America where they maintain their Russian identity. Soviet Jews who immigrated in their twenties, thirties, and forties combine both Russian and American heritage in the United States. Those who were brought to America in their childhood and in their teens are fully acculturated into American society. While the majority of the older immigrants base their Jewish identity on feelings, the younger generation defines it in cultural terms
Scaffolding the New Deal: Exploring the Legislative Roots of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Fireside Chats by Christopher Brockman( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The historiography of President Franklin Roosevelt's fireside chats, up until this point, have focused on FDR's ability to radiate confidence via these captivating and extremely popular radio addresses. When examined more closely, a clear outline of the New Deal takes shape, suggesting FDR's true intentions behind the fireside chats: to educate the public of the administration's legislative endeavors. Roosevelt's second fireside chat, delivered on May 7, 1933, provides a vision for how the New Deal would correct the agricultural and industrial ills of the Great Depression and, in turn, revitalize the United States. In order to connect the fireside chat with Roosevelt's legislative agenda, documents from key advisors and Roosevelt himself are considered in connection with the creation of the second fireside chat. More importantly, a collection of letters written to FDR in reaction to this specific fireside address are examined, exposing a passionate public response to the New Deal
Health Care Over Caring for the Health of Neighborhoods?: The Effects of Continually Expanding Medical Campuses in Cleveland and the Lehigh Valley, 1980-2014 by Scott M Fox( )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

After many American urban areas lost industrial jobs during the last half of the 20th century, the largest local private employers often became large non-profit hospital systems. From the 1980s to the present, these hospitals went on frequent building sprees to provide more services while competing with their regional competitors. Local governments often encouraged the hospitals' expansion as a way to improve economically depressed neighborhoods and bring greater prestige to the area through highly rated health care. Scholars and economists argue that the large amount of public investment placed in non-profit hospital campuses reduces the likelihood of vacancies in its surrounding neighborhoods and improves these areas' ability to be a stable community. Focusing on neighborhoods surrounding growing hospitals in the Cleveland and Lehigh Valley metropolitan areas, this paper rebuts that theory, finding hospitals encroaching onto housing and census tract data that that does not suggest viable communities
