The passions of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux by James David Draper( Book )

13 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 387 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) was an extraordinarily gifted sculptor, the greatest in 19th-century France before Rodin, and embodied the emotionally charged artistic climate of his era ... Carpeaux's wrenching representations of human forms, shown in beautiful color details and illustrations, echo his turbulent personal life, fraught with episodes of violence and fatal illness. The book covers the entire span of Carpeaux's career, and includes the masterpiece Ugolino and His Sons, newly discovered drawings, and a number of rarely seen or studied works. Previously unpublished letters between Carpeaux and his family and friends, a wealth of archival material, and the most detailed chronology of the artist's life ever published."--Yale University Press website
Augustin Pajou : royal sculptor, 1730-1809 by James David Draper( Book )

10 editions published in 1997 in English and Undetermined and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is the first major study of the French Neoclassical sculptor Augustin Pajou (1730-1809) in almost a century, and it is the only work about him in English. Here the artist's work is discussed and illustrated in depth, and the artistic, courtly, and aristocratic circles in which he worked are considered in detail. This examination concentrates on the beginnings of Neoclassicism and explores the philosophical and scientific underpinnings of the Enlightenment, in which Pajou played an important part. This publication, which accompanies a major exhibition at the Musee du Louvre, Paris, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, presents to both the scholar and the general reader a great artist who has at last received his due. The volume is lavishly illustrated and contains a detailed chronology, a short history of the artist's critical reputation, an exhaustive bibliography, and a complete index
Playing with fire : European terracotta models, 1740-1840 by James David Draper( Book )

7 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 363 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This publication offers the first comprehensive overview of Neoclassical modeling in the years from 1740 to 1840. The catalogue, numbering 142 objects, analyzes modeling at every stage, from the brusque preliminary impulse of the artist to the highly finished statuettes that were regarded as works of art in their own right. Many of the greatest names are represented here: from France, Bouchardon, Pigalle, Pajou, Houdon, Roland, Clodion, Stouf, and Chinard; from Germany, Dannecker and Schadow; from Italy, Canova and Pacetti; from Sweden, the magnificent Sergel. Some artists are examined in considerable depth, with as many as nine works. Lesser-known talents who merit greater attention and emerge heroically are the Swiss Sonnenschein and the Russians Kozlovsky and Martos." "The sections of the catalogue, each preceded by an introductory essay, examine the sculptors' techniques and training and explore prominent themes, such as terracotta's role in the statuary of Great Men and in tomb sculpture, depictions of Arcadia and the loves of the gods, and scenes from the Iliad and Ovid's Metamorphoses. Special attention is paid to the ancient visual and literary sources that motivated these generations of discerning and erudite sculptors. Short biographies of all of the artists are included."--Jacket
Only the best : masterpieces of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon by Katharine Baetjer( Book )

10 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume and the exhibition it accompanies bring together eighty of the finest masterpieces in the collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon. All of the works of art are richly illustrated in color and described in authoritative texts by the curators of the Gulbenkian Museum. These magnificent pieces, which reflect the renowned art collector Calouste Gulbenkian's eclectic taste, include paintings by Rubens, Fragonard, Gainsborough, Turner, and Manet; silver from services created for the nobility of Russia and Western Europe; Roman medallions; Ottoman ceramics; Japanese lacquerware; jewelry by Lalique; and books and textiles from both East and West. These works of art offer dazzling testimony to Gulbenkian's devotion to the quality of the individual object and to his refined connoisseurship. The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum was created under the terms of Gulbenkian's will in order to preserve under one roof the artworks in his collection--one of the preeminent art assemblages of the first half of the twentieth century. Gulbenkian, a successful businessman who was born in 1869 in Ottoman Turkey to an Armenian family, made his fortune in the oil industry. In April 1942, in the midst of World War II, he arrived in Lisbon seeking a peaceful place to live. Portugal had remained neutral in the conflict that was engulfing the world. Gulbenkian spent the rest of his life in Lisbon, where he died in 1955. As a collector--whether of ancient Egyptian art, Islamic art, or European painting and decorative arts--Gulbenkian acquired "only the best."

Carpeaux 1827-1875 : un sculpteur pour l'empire by N.Y.) Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York( Book )

6 editions published in 2014 in French and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Seventeenth-century Delft has often been viewed as a quaint town whose artists painted scenes of domestic life. This book revises that image, showing that the small but vibrant Dutch city produced a wide range of artworks, including luxurious tapestries and silver objects, as well as sophisticated paintings for the court at The Hague and for patrician collectors in Delft itself."--Jacket
