Cell Biology of the Major Histocompatibility Complex documents the proceedings of a symposium on """"Cell Biology of the Major Histocompatibility Complex"""" held at Arden House on the Harriman Campus of Columbia University from June 8 -10, 1984. The meeting was the ninth of the P & S Biomedical Sciences Symposia. The book is organized into five parts. Part I on the structure of MHC molecules includes papers on human histocompatibility antigens; the cloning of human MHC; and organization of the genes of the H-2 complex. Part II on alternate forms of MHC molecules includes studies on the expre
The molecular basis of B-cell differentiation and function by M Ferrarini( Book )

10 editions published between 1986 and 1987 in English and held by 242 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The progress in protein and nucleic acid chemistry together with improvements of the previously employed tissue culture techniques have led to the solution of problems such as that of the generation of antibody diversity or of the molecular structure of T and B cell membrane receptor for antigen which had challenged the past generations of immunologists. Thanks to this progress an impressive amount of knowledge has been accumulated on certain cell types that were relatively "mysterious" until recently. The B lymphocyte represents a typical example of such a cell. With these considerations in mind, we have started to organize a NATO summer school on "The molecular basis of B cell differentation and function" that had the specific aim of bringing up to date a selected number of young investigators. During the course, held in Santa Margheri ta Ligure, October 1-11, 1985 it became apparent that rather than a formal school we had organized an informal series of Workshops where both the Faculty members and the participants were discussing their own data in addition to reviewing the general progress in the field. The deep commi ttment of everyone to his research subj ect and the enthusiasm had caused this very successful change in the shape of the course. At the end we asked the members of the Faculty and the participants to write a summary of their data and of their point of view on selected subj ect s
T Lymphocytes : structure, functions, choices by Franco Celada( Book )

13 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 210 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Porto Conte (Alghero), Sardinia, September 15-27, 1991. The A.S. 1. was attended by 86 graduate and postgraduate students from 18 different countries, and was hosted by the newly founded International Laboratory of Molecular Genetics of Porto Conte, directed by Prof. Marcello Siniscalco. The A.S.I. was funded by NATO Scientific Affairs Division, the International Union of Immunological Societies, the European Community (Directorate General for Science, Research and Development), the Italian Research Council, and the San Raffaele Institute of Milano. In addition, a number of students who reside in the U.S. received travel funds from the U.S. National Science Foundation, and the Turkish National Fund provided financial assistance to several students from Turkey. When we decided to organize a course on T lymphocytes, our concern was to reach a balance between the teaching of both the hard core principles and the latest experimental findings of cellular immunology, and the recently expanded interfaces with the not-yetƯ known: hypotheses, speCUlations, new projections to be born from the discussions

Immunological Methods, Volume IV provides information pertinent to the methods in immunological research. This book focuses on cells, clones, and cell lines, as well as on their components and secreted products. Organized into 21 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of hybridoma methodology as the most celebrated immunological method. This text then discusses cell fusion, hybridoma technology, and everything related to monoclonal antibodies. Other chapters consider another molecular biology method, which describes the procedure required for establishing a partitioned cDNA-libra

Immunological reactions in viral hepatitis( Book )

2 editions published between 1967 and 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Viral hepatitis sera (VHS) have been shown to possess mitosis-inhibiting (MI) and chromosome damaging (CD) activities on lymphocytes cultured in vitro in presence of phytohemagglutinin. These activities can be perpetuated by serial passage with filtered medium from cultures treated with VHS. The MI can be prevented by pooled human gamma globulins. When VHS from one patient was tested on lymphocytes from different donors large differences in inhibition were observed. Thus in plasma of donors there may be antibodies able to prevent the MI (but not CD) effect of VHS. Differences in results from different laboratories as to frequency of Australia antigen seem to be due partly to methods (immunodiffusion vs. complement fixation) and partly to different specificity of antisera. The frequency of AA in infectious and serum hepatitis, liver diseases, thalassemia, mongolism and lepromatous leprosy is reported. Screening of healthy blood donors from different regions showed the frequency of the AA carrier state to be much higher in Sardinia than in continental Italy. (Author)
