Oceanography in 2025 : proceedings of a workshop by National Research Council (U.S.)( )

10 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 1,423 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On January 8 and 9, 2009, the Ocean Studies Board of the National Research Council, in response to a request from the Office of Naval Research, hosted the "Oceanography in 2025" workshop. The goal of the workshop was to bring together scientists, engineers, and technologists to explore future directions in oceanography, with an emphasis on physical processes. The focus centered on research and technology needs, trends, and barriers that may impact the field of oceanography over the next 16 years, and highlighted specific areas of interest: submesoscale processes, air-sea interactions, basic and applied research, instrumentation and vehicles, ocean infrastructure, and education

Sociocultural data to accomplish Department of Defense missions : toward a unified social framework : workshop summary by National Research Council (U.S.)( )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 1,199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Summarizes presentations and discussions that took place on August 16-17, 2010, at a National Research Council public workshop sponsored by the Office of Naval Research. The workshop addressed the variables and complex interaction of social and cultural factors that influence human behavior, focusing on potential applications to the full spectrum of military operations. The workshop's keynote address by Major General Michael T. Flynn, U.S. Army, provided critical context about the cultural situation and needs of the military operating in Afghanistan. Additional presentations were divided into four panels to address the diverse missions encountered by the U.S. military worldwide. The workshop concluded with a final panel to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different methods of acquiring and using relevant data and knowledge to accomplish these missions

Implementation challenges for high-temperature composites by Anthony G Evans( )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 1,104 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Some issues that influence the implementation of Ceramic (CMC) and titanium (TMC) matrix composites in high-temperature systems are addressed. Commonalities and differences are broutht out by comparing and contrasting their themomechanical characteristics, with examples. Emphasis is given to the role of design and the use of mechanism-based models of material behavior. Factors addressed include the relative significance of thoughness and ductility for thermostructural applications, including their manifestation in the notch sensitivity. The detriments caused by anisotropy are examined, through discussions of mechanisms such as delamination in CMC's and transverse debonding in TMC's."--Page 1

Science and technology to counter terrorism : proceedings of an Indo-U.S. workshop( )

6 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 899 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents the papers and summarizes the discussions of a workshop held in Goa, India, in January 2004, organized by the Indian National Institute of Advanced Science (NIAS) and the U.S. Committee on International Security and Arms Control (CISAC). During the workshop, Indian and U.S. experts examined the terrorist threat faced in both countries and elsewhere in the world, and explored opportunities for the U.S. and India to work together. Bringing together scientists and experts with common scientific and technical backgrounds from different cultures provided a unique opportunity to explore possible means of preventing or mitigating future terrorist attacks

"In this volume are recorded the proceedings of a Conference on Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior held in the fall of 1959 under the auspices of New York University and the U.S. Office of Naval Research. The proceedings consist of seven papers prepared ahead of the meeting, together with a paper prepared by the discussant of each paper. Except for minor editing and, in some cases, the addition of footnotes, the prepared papers are in the form in which they appeared at the conference"--Preface. Verbal behavior and learning: problems and processes; proceedings by Conference on Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior( Book )

5 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 635 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The topics treated in this second conference represent, to a major extent, unfinished business of the first conference. A reading of the proceedings of the first conference will reveal, at several points, concern with matters such as meaningfulness, familiarity, syntax, immediate memory, and one-trial learning. Few of these topics were treated explicitly in the first meeting, but they all received direct treatment in the present conference. Other topics treated here did not figure in the earlier deliberations as directly as those just mentioned, but again, the record of the first conference shows some concern with mediational mechanisms and the selectivity which subjects often show in the responses they give to specific situations. The treatments in this second conference of stimulus selection, mediated associations, and purpose and associative selectivity are relevant to these concerns touched on a year and a half ago. Recognition processes, the remaining subject in the second conference, are regarded as basic to many other issues. There is, then, a good deal of continuity between the conferences. Taken together, they give a picture of substantial scope of the fields of verbal learning and verbal behavior and of their interrelationships"--Book.
