Profit and principle : Hugo Grotius, natural rights theories and the rise of Dutch power in the East Indies, 1595-1615 by Martine Julia Van Ittersum( )

4 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1,206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph is a study of the interaction of politics and political theory in The Netherlands and Asia in the early seventeenth century. Its focal point is the Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), who developed his rights and contract theories for the benefit of the United Dutch East India Company or VOC. The monograph reconstructs the immediate historical context of his political thought, as conceptualized in his early manuscript De Jure Praedae/On the Law of Prize and Booty and Mare Liberum/The Free Sea (1609). It argues that Grotius' justification of Dutch interloping in the colonial empires of Spain and Portugal made possible the VOC's rise to power in the Malay Archipelago, which resulted in the slow, but steady, loss of selfdetermination on the part of the inhabitants of the Spice Islands
Commentary on the law of prize and booty by Hugo Grotius( )

21 editions published between 1950 and 2014 in English and held by 1,172 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Commissioned in October 1604 by the United Dutch East India Company, Hugo Grotius's Commentary on the Law of Prize and Booty was intended to justify the Dutch capture in 1603 of a wealthy Portuguese merchantman, the Santa Catarina, in the Strait of Singapore. In a clever and intricate defense of international free trade, Grotius (1583-1645) introduced the notion of a man as a sovereign and free individual with a right to self-defense and, by extension, the right of a company of private merchants to establish a trade empire."--Jacket
The free sea by Hugo Grotius( )

17 editions published between 2004 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,141 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The freedom of the seas -- meaning both the oceans of the world and coastal waters -- has been among the most contentious issues in international law for the past four hundred years. The most influential argument in favour of freedom of navigation, trade, and fishing was that put forth by the Dutch theorist Hugo Grotius in his 1609 'Mare Liberum'. "The Free Sea" was originally published in order to buttress Dutch claims of access to the lucrative markets of the East Indies. It had been composed as the twelfth chapter of a larger work, "De Jure Praedae" ('On the Law of Prize and Booty'), which Grotius had written to defend the Dutch East India Company's capture in 1603 of a rich Portuguese merchant ship in the Straits of Singapore. This new edition publishes the only translation of Grotius's masterpiece undertaken in his own lifetime -- a work left in manuscript by the English historian and promoter of overseas exploration Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616). This volume also contains William Welwod's critque of Grotius (reprinted for the first time since the seventeenth century) and Grotius's reply to Welwod. Taken together, these documents provide an indispensable introduction to modern ideas of sovereignty and property as they emerged from the early-modern tradition of natural law. -- Back cover

The rights of war and peace : including the law of nature and of nations by Hugo Grotius( Book )

53 editions published between 1814 and 2017 in English and Latin and held by 1,052 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"First published in Paris in Latin (1625), 'The Rights of War and Peace' laid the foundations of the modern system of public international law. Grotius addresses situations in which war is a legitimate instrument of law enforcement and outlines principles for the lawful use of armed force. Based on a Christian understanding of natural law, Grotius advanced the novel argument that his system would still be valid even if it lacked a divine basis. He pointed to the future by moving international law in a secular direction."--Back cover

Hugonis Grotii Annales et historiae de rebus Belgicis by Hugo Grotius( Book )

146 editions published between 1642 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 856 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Commentary on the law of prize and booty by Hugo Grotius( Book )

90 editions published between 1635 and 2015 in 6 languages and held by 804 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this work, Grotius examines the historical, political, and legal aspects of war and sets forth a foundation for international law because of his argument against the territorial sovereignty of the world's coastal waters. The manuscript resulted from a dispute arose between the united kingdom of Spain and Portugal and the Dutch. Spain-Portugal claimed a monopoly on trade with the East Indies. In 1604, after a Dutch admiral seized the Portuguese vessel Santa Catarina, the Dutch East India Company asked Grotius to produce a work legally defending that action. Their grounds were that, by claiming a monopoly on the right of trade, Spain-Portugal had deprived the Dutch of their natural trading rights. Grotius's De Jure Praedae was unpublished during his lifetime, except for one chapter, Mare Liberum ("The Freedom of the Seas"). This chapter buttressed the Dutch position in the negotiations for the Twelve Years' Truce with Spain that were concluded in 1609

Hugo Grotius on the law of war and peace by Hugo Grotius( )

19 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 738 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Despite its significant influence on international law, international relations, natural law and political thought in general, Grotius's Law of War and Peace has been virtually unavailable for many decades. Stephen C. Neff's edited and annotated version of the text rectifies this situation. Containing the substantive portion of the classic text, but shorn of extraneous material, this edition of one of the classic works of Western legal and political thought is intended for students and teachers in four primary areas: history of international law; history of political thought; history of international relations; and history of philosophy"--Page 4 of cover
