A study of the need for additional facilities for the education of librarians in the University of California by Neal Harlow( Book )

4 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study and recommendations are based on visits to 5 campuses of the University of California and interviews with librarians, faculty, and University officials, also taking into account available data on supply and demand of professional staff in California. Conclusions are that the need for librarians in the state, the rapid expansion of librarianship and information science and the professional curriculum, and the urgent need for research result in a major new responsibility for the existing schools at Berkeley and los Angeles. It is recommended that the schools at U.c.l.a. And Berkeley increase their enrollment quotas, enlarge and diversify their faculty, and expand their provision of space, with the deans and administrative officers achieving a continuing commitment to these objectives. It is also concluded that these existing graduate schools cannot meet the need for professional librarians in California, that other university campuses offer access to new sources of graduate students, and that new non-conventional and interdisciplinary programs are essential to the development of library services. Therefore, the establishment of two new library schools in the University of California within five years is recommended. Appended is the estimated number of professional librarians needed per year for 1965 to 1980, the total enrollment at the 3 accredited library schools, the criteria used to evaluate potential library school sites, and an analysis of legal responsibility for California library education. Hard copy is available from the office of the president, University of California, Berkeley 94720. (jb)
