What has nature ever done for us? : how money really does grow on trees by Tony Juniper( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A new wave of environmental attention focuses on a wholly different set of subjects: namely that of 'natural capital, ' 'ecosystem services' and 'biodiversity, ' or in other words, what Nature does for us. From Indian Vultures to Chinese bees and from recycling miracles in the soil to the abundant genetic codebook underpinning our food and pharmaceutical needs, Nature provides the 'ecosystem services' that underlie our economies. It has been estimated that these and other services are worth about twice the global GDP, and yet we take most of these services for granted, imagining them free and limitless- until they suddenly switch off. This is a book full of immediate, impactful stories, containing warnings, such as the rabies epidemic that followed a disappearance of Indian vultures (hormones in cattle killed the birds and resulted in a surplus of carcasses, creating an explosion of wild dogs), as well as promising and enlightening tales of how birds protect fruit harvests, coral reefs shield coasts from storms and how the rainforests absorb billions of tons of carbon released from automobiles and power stations. Tony Juniper's book will change the whole way you think about life, the planet and the economy

Traditional architecture : timeless building for the twenty-first century by Alireza Sagharchi( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A comprehensive overview of current trends in classicist and vernacular architecture. This book presents 130 projects that reconsider what it means to practice as a traditional architect in the twenty-first century, including a substantial body of work from non-Western countries as well as work by contemporary masters of classical design such as Robert A. M. Stern, Allan Greenberg, Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, and Quinlan and Francis Terry. The projects assembled here highlight the awareness of a sustainable localism and the continuity of traditional building crafts on a global scale and reveal the resilience and originality of traditional building cultures despite the enormous economic and cultural pressures of contemporary development. This is an optimistic vision of a new breed of traditional architects who endeavor to enrich the future while honoring the past"--Amazon.com, viewed March 4, 2014

Watercolour masters, then & now( Book )

1 edition published in 2006 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Royal Watercolour Society possesses one of the most important existing collections of watercolours - the RWS Diploma Collection. In 1860, the members of the RWS Council proposed that, following the example of the Royal Academy, each newly elected member should give a painting to the Society; after 1882 when Diplomas signed by Queen Victoria were given to new members, these pictures became known as Diploma Works. The RWS had also been given works by members elected at an earlier date, and a fine collection began to take shape. It now includes works by many famous names such as David Cox, Peter De Wint, Samuel Palmer, Edward Burne-Jones, Laura Knight, John Singer Sargent and William Russell Flint. To creat this beautifully presented book the members of this prestigious Society have looked through their collection, and each member has chosen a work that personally and particularly inspires them. They have then generated works of their own that reflect that inspiration. Their revealing essays give the reasons for their choice, discuss the methods that their chosen artist appears to have used, and the ways in which those techniques compare with their own. Watercolour Masters: Then and Now showcases the most inspirational paintings, especially chosen or created, as well as useful and revealing insights from leading artists. The book is divided into five sections: composition, colour, tone, draughtsmanship, and creating a narrative, with each artist focusing on the theme that best explains the appeal of their chosen picture. A unique journey into the minds of the masters of watercolour, past and present, Watercolour Masters is sure to delight anyone interested in this medium. -- from dust jacket
