Publisher description: "Early in August, 1883, a weary traveler stopped at our ranch in the Yellowstone Valley and advised us that he had recently visited a most wonderful country out west on the shore of Puget Sound, and the little town where he had been was the farthestmost west and the farthest north of any town on the mainland United States, and was called "Whatcom." He told of the great forests of giant trees, of the wonderful soil productions, of cabbages as big as tubs, wild blackberries in prodigal abundance in the clearings, and fresh fish and game ad infinitum. Pioneering always did have a charm for me, and I fostered the sentiment. My wife was not always in accord with this sentiment of mine, but usually conceded to my wanderlust without much protest. Our visitor took his departure, but his form had not yet faded in the distance before we were eagerly and excitedly planning on how quickly we could cash in and be on the road to the new El Dorado--Whatcom County, Washington Territory." So begins William Harris' intriguing and often humorous account of living and homesteading in Whatcom County in the 1880's. Harris describes the town of Whatcom--now a part of the City of Bellingham--at a time when the community consisted of no more than a few buildings and a dozen inhabitants. He speaks with first hand knowledge about local activities and disasters including town meetings, politics, and the fire of 1885. The Harris family left Whatcom to become the first settlers at Lake Samish, twelve miles south of Bellingham. Harris gives the reader a detailed account of the development of his homestead: its first discovery, trail cutting, land clearing and house building, and final settling in. He describes the forest and lake environment and provides numerous anecdotes about the wild animals of the area. The Harris Journal is a fascinating and highly readable narrative of an era when a homestead twelve miles from Bellingham was in a remote wilderness
