The thermomechanical behavior of unidirectionally fiber reinforced laminae in plane stress has been described by a set of nonlinear thermomechanical stress-strain relations. A general procedure for analysis of in-plane loaded symmetric laminates, composed of such laminae, has been established for simultaneous loading and temperature inputs. A + or -45 deg laminate subjected to heating and uniaxial load has been analyzed in detail. Analyses of Graphite/Polyimide laminates have shown that the thermomechanical strains cannot be separated into mechanical strain and free thermal expansion strain. Consequently the free thermal expansion coefficient is generally not useful for computation of thermal strains in a loaded nonlinear laminate. Moreover, a laminate such as the + or -45 deg which behaves isotropically for free thermal expansion behaves anisotropically when loaded and heated. Elastic properties and thermal expansion coefficients of unidirectional Graphite/Polyimide specimens were measured as a function of temperature to provide inputs for the analysis. The + or -45 deg symmetric Graphite/Polyimide laminates were tested to obtain free thermal expansion coefficients and thermal expansion coefficients under various uniaxial loads. The experimental results demonstrated the effects predicted by the analysis, namely dependence of thermal expansion coefficients on load, and anisotropy of thermal expansion under load. Numerical agreement of analytical and experimental results was fair. The significance of time dependence on thermal expansion was demonstrated by comparison of measured laminate free expansion coefficients with and without 15-day delay at intermediate temperature. Rynite 545, a commercial short glass fiber/ thermoplastic polyethylene terepthalate system, was injection molded into end-gated rectangular plaques of various thicknesses. The plaques were sectioned and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and by mechanical and thermal expansion tests. The glass fibers are shown to be highly aligned in 'boundary layers' near the mold surfaces, and are distributed more randomly away from the mold surfaces. As part thickness increased, the aligned fiber boundary layers occupied a smaller proportion of the cross section, resulting in a decrease in mechanical properties. Tensile moduli are derived for boundary and center layers, which can be used to accurately predict the effective moduli at different thicknesses. In addition, the boundary layer thicknesses at the top and bottom surfaces were unequal, producing noticeable warping for thicker plaques. (MM)

The compressive strength of composite laminates is greatly reduced by the local instabilities initiated by interlaminar defects. In the present study, the reduction in compressive strength of a (0/+ or - 45 (sub 2)/0s AS/3501-6 graphite-epoxy laminate containing implanted interlaminar defects is examined. The experimental study consisted of the four-point static loading of sandwich beams with graphite-epoxy face sheets having through-width delaminations of 0.5 in. (12.7mm), 0.75 in. (19.1mm), 1.0 in. (25.4mm) and 1.5 in. (38.1mm) in length. Failure consisted of the unstable interlaminar crack growth within the compressive face of the sandwich. Reduction in flexure strength was found to be directly proportional to debond length and varied from 41 to 87 percent of the pristine value. Combined stability and finite element analysis showed that the initial out-of-plane deformations of the sublaminate induced by residual stresses decreases axial stiffness of the buckled sublaminate and results in both Mode I and Mode II propagation at the interlaminar crack tip. jg p4
