Socioeconomic status, parenting, and child development by Marc H Bornstein( )

22 editions published between 2002 and 2014 in English and held by 1,633 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Noting that there is near universal agreement that children from families with higher socioeconomic status (ses) have access to more of the resources needed to support their positive development than do lower ses children, this monograph examines the myriad questions remaining regarding relations among ses, parenting, and child development from a array of different disciplines and a variety of perspectives. The book is divided into two parts: Part 1 concerns the constructs and measurement of ses, and Part 2, the functions and effects of ses. Each part presents four substantive chapters on the topic, followed by an interpretive and constructively critical commentary. Following introductory remarks, the chapters are: (1) "a Decade of Measuring ses: What It Tells Us and Where To Go from Here" (Margaret E. Ensminger and Kate Fothergill); (2) "Socioeconomic Status, Parenting, and Child Development: The Hollingshead Four-Factor Index of Social Status and the Socioeconomic Index of Occupations" (Marc H. Bornstein, Chun-Shin Hahn, Joan T.D. Suwalsky, and O. Maurice Haynes); (3) "Off with Hollingshead: Socioeconomic Resources, Parenting, and Child Development" (Greg J. Duncan and Katherine A. Magnuson); (4) "Socioeconomic Resources, Parenting, Poverty, and Child Development among Immigrant Families" (Andrew J. Fuligni and Hirokazu Yoshikawa); (5) "Methodological Issues in Studies of ses, Parenting, and Child Development" (Lois Wladis Hoffman); (6) "Causes and Consequences of SES-Related Differences in Parent-to-Child Speech" (Erika Hoff); (7) "Age and Ethnic Variations in Family Process Mediators of ses" (Robert H. Bradley and Robert F. Corwyn); (8) "Socioeconomic Status in Children's Development and Family Environment: Infancy through Adolescence" (Allen W. Gottfried, Adele E. Gottfried, Kay Bathurst, Diana Wright Guerin, and Makeba M. Parramore): (9) "Moving on Up: Neighborhood Effects on Children and Families" (Tama Leventhal and Jeanne Brooks-Gunn); and (10) "'What Are ses Effects Effects Of?' ""Developmental Science: An Advanced Textbook is the most complete and cutting-edge introduction to the field available today. Since its initial publication, the key purpose of the text has been to furnish inclusive developmental perspectives on all substantive areas in psychology--neuroscience, perception, cognition, language, emotion, and social interaction. This edition is no exception, as it continues to underscore the dynamic and exciting status of contemporary developmental science. In this Seventh Edition, Marc H. Bornstein and Michael E. Lamb once again invite international experts to prepare original, comprehensive, and topical treatments of the major areas of developmental science, which are masterfully woven into a single coherent volume. Some chapters in this edition are new, and those carried forward from the sixth edition have been extensively revised. This volume represents faithfully the current status of scholarly efforts in all aspects of developmental science.""--Publisher's description."

Handbook of parenting by Diana Baumrind( Book )

12 editions published between 2002 and 2019 in English and held by 416 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Completely revised and expanded from four to five volumes, this new edition of the Handbook of Parenting appears at a time that is momentous in the history of parenting. Parenting and the family are today in a greater state of flux, question, and redefinition than perhaps ever before. We are witnessing the emergence of striking permutations on the theme of parenting: blended families, lesbian and gay parents, and teen versus fifties first-time moms and dads. One cannot but be awed on the biological front by technology that now not only renders postmenopausal women capable of childbearing, but also presents us with the possibility of designing babies. Similarly on the sociological front, single parenthood is a modern day fact of life, adult child dependency is on the rise, and parents are ever less certain of their own roles, even in the face of rising environmental and institutional demands that they take increasing responsibility for their offspring. The Handbook of Parenting concerns itself with: *different types of parents--mothers and fathers, single, adolescent, and adoptive parents; *basic characteristics of parenting--behaviors, knowledge, beliefs, and expectations about parenting; *forces that shape parenting--evolution, genetics, biology, employment, social class, culture, environment, and history; *problems faced by parents--handicap, marital difficulties, drug addiction; and *practical concerns of parenting--how to promote children's health, foster social adjustment and cognitive competence, and interact with school, legal, and public officials. Contributors to the Handbook of Parenting have worked in different ways toward understanding all these diverse aspects of parenting, and all look to the most recent research and thinking in the field to shed light on many topics every parent wonders about. Each chapter addresses a different but
