Disc 1: "This is the tale of the strange adventures of young Allan Gray, who immersed himself in the study of devil worship and vampires. Preoccupied with superstitions of centuries past, he became a dreamer for whom the line between the real and the supernatural became blurred. His aimless wanderings led him late one evening to a secluded inn by the river in a village called Courtempierre" - title screen. Grey starts seeing weird, inexplicable sights (a man whose shadow has a life of its own, a mysterious scythe-bearing figure tolling a bell, a terrifying dream of his own burial) but things come to a head when one of the daughters of the lord of the castle succumbs to anaemia - or is it something more sinister?

A great, aging artist succumbs to despair when the young model and pupil he adores leaves him for a woman. Although the story is discreetly played at a father/adopted son level on the surface, the homosexual subtext is quite clear in this early Dreyer film made in Germany

102 editions published between 1954 and 2018 in 9 languages and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A farmer's family is torn apart by faith, sanctity, and love-one child believes he's Jesus Christ, a second proclaims himself agnostic, and the third falls in love with a fundamentalist's daughter. Putting the lie to the term "organized religion," Ordet (The Word) is a challenge to simple facts and dogmatic orthodoxy. Layering multiple stories of faith and rebellion, Dreyer's adaptation of Kaj Munk's play quietly builds towards a shattering, miraculous climax."--Website

Gertrud by Carl Theodor Dreyer( Visual )

83 editions published between 1964 and 2015 in 9 languages and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Carl Dreyer's last film neatly crowns his career: a meditation on tragedy, individual will and the refusal to compromise. A woman leaves her unfulfilling marriage and embarks on a search for ideal love-but neither a passionate affair with a younger man nor the return of an old romance can provide the answer she seeks. Always the stylistic innovator, Dreyer employs long takes and theatrical staging to concentrate on Nina Pens Rode's sublime portrayal of the proud and courageous Gertrud."--Website
