The tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare( Book )

4,290 editions published between 1599 and 2018 in 61 languages and held by 31,734 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Presents the original text of Shakespeare's play side by side with a modern version, with discussion questions, role-playing scenarios, and other study activities. Marc Antony comes "to bury Caesar, not to praise him," and his funeral oration unleashes a power struggle among the Roman Empire's mightiest generals and statesmen. Books in this new, illustrated series present complete texts of Shakespeare's plays. However, the lines are set up so students can see the bard's original poetic phrases printed side-by-side and line-by-line with a modern "translation" on the facing page. Starting in the late 1580s and for several decades that followed, Shakespeare's plays were popular entertainment for London's theatergoers. His Globe Theatre was the equivalent of a Broadway theater in today's New York. The plays have endured, but over the course of 400+ years, the English language has changed in many ways-which is why today's students often find Shakespeare's idiom difficult to comprehend. Simply Shakespeare offers an excellent solution to their problem. Introducing each play is a general essay covering Shakespeare's life and times. At the beginning of each of the five acts in every play, a two-page spread describes what is about to take place. The story's background is explained, followed by brief descriptions of key people who will appear in the act, details students should watch for as the story unfolds, discussion of the play's historical context, how the play was staged in Shakespeare's day, and explanation of puns and plays on words that occur in characters' dialogues. Identifying icons preceding each of these study points are printed in a second color, then are located again as cross-references in the play's original text. For instance, where words spoken by a person in the play offer insights into his or another character's personality, the "Characters" icon will appear as a cross-reference in both the introductory spread and the play proper. Following each act, a closing spread presents questions and discussion points for use as teachers' aids. Guided by the inspiring format of this fine new series, both teachers and students will come to understand and appreciate the genius of Shakespeare as never before. The tragedy of Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare( Book )

968 editions published between 1590 and 2017 in 23 languages and held by 11,832 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Titus Andronicus is still regarded by many as a bad play of dubious authorship. Its adversaries have abhorred the violence of the action and the apparent lapses in the quality of the verse. Since 1945, however, the play has been taken increasingly seriously in both the theatre and the study: the violence and cruelty it depicts were disconcertingly matched by the events of two World Wars. Alan Hughes joins those critics who take the play seriously, arguing for its unity of theme and its grim humour, and demonstrates that it is the work of a brilliant stage craftsman, confident in his mastery of space, movement and verse." "The text is based on the first quarto, supplemented by crucial additions and stage directions from the Folio. The critical account of the play's fortunes is integrated within a description of major modern productions, including those directed by Peter Brook, Brian Bedford and Deborah Warner. In addition there is a complete stage history which includes the eighteenth-century adaptation by Edward Ravenscroft and a reconstruction of the version performed by the nineteenth-century black American actor Ira Aldridge. For this updated edition, a new section is included on recent stage, film and critical interpretations by Sue Hall-Smith. There are also sections on text, authorship and the relevance of the famous Longleat drawing of the play. Appendices explore how the play might have been performed at the Rose playhouse in London, and how it could be adapted for a touring company of fourteen men and boys. An updated reading list completes the edition."--Jacket

Troilus and Cressida by William Shakespeare( Book )

1,120 editions published between 1602 and 2017 in 17 languages and held by 11,373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Troilus and Cressida, long considered one of Shakespeare's most problematic plays, is both difficult and fascinating. Largely neglected during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it has recently proved popular and rewarding on the stage as well as in the study. This edition questions certain received ideas about the play's text, especially the relationship between Quarto and Folio, and offers several new readings of old problems. Dawson's textual choices are often surprising but at the same time carefully grounded. He views the play from a performance perspective - frequently in the Commentary as well as in the detailed section on stage history in the Introduction. The Introduction also covers the cultural context in which the play was written, probes the controversy about its early performance, and provides extensive analysis of character, language, genre, and contemporary significance."--Jacket

Gwynne Evans and Anthony Hecht also address the many questions that cast a veil of mystery over the genesis of the Sonnets: to what extent are they autobiographical? What is the nature of the 'love', strongly expressed, between the 'poet', the 'youth' and the 'Dark Lady'? Can they, apart from the poet, be Identified? Who is the 'rival poet'? When were the Sonnets written and in what order? What were the circumstances surrounding their publication?
