The question of German guilt by Karl Jaspers( Book )

134 editions published between 1946 and 2015 in 12 languages and held by 3,380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Shortly after the Nazi government fell, a philosophy professor at Heidelberg University lectured on a subject that burned the consciousness and conscience of thinking Germans. 'Are the German people guilty?' These lectures by Karl Jaspers, an outstanding European philosopher, attracted wide attention among German intellectuals and students; they seemed to offer a path to sanity and morality in a disordered world. Jaspers, a life-long liberal, attempted in this book to discuss rationally a problem that had thus far evoked only heat and fury. Neither an evasive apology nor a thorough condemnation, his book distinguished between types of guilt and degrees of responsibility. He listed four categories of guilt: criminal guilt (the commitment of overt acts), political guilt (the degree of political acquiescence in the Nazi regime), moral guilt (a matter of private judgment among one's friends), and metaphysical guilt (a universally shared responsibility of those who chose to remain alive rather than die in protest against Nazi atrocities)."

First published in English in 1953, this important book from eminent philosopher Karl Jaspers deals with the philosophy of the history of mankind. More specifically, its avowed aim is to assist in heightening our awareness of the present by placing it within the framework of the long obscurity of prehistory and the boundless realm of possibilities which lie within the undecided future. This analysis is split into three parts: World history; the present and the future; and the meaning of history

Philosophical faith and revelation by Karl Jaspers( Book )

75 editions published between 1948 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 1,636 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reason and Existenz : five lectures by Karl Jaspers( Book )

38 editions published between 1955 and 1997 in English and German and held by 1,353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The intent of Jaspers' philosophizing then is simply to recall us to our authentic situation. This recall is not itself a doctrine; it is only the stimulus to an inward action each must perform for himself in communication with others. Jaspers' Existenz-philosophy is thus an attempt to consider and enact human honesty; it is philosophy, not as wisdom, but as the love of wisdom

Nietzsche : an introduction to the understanding of his philosophical activity by Karl Jaspers( Book )

38 editions published between 1965 and 1997 in English and German and held by 1,303 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Nietzsche claimed to be a philosopher of the future, but he was appropriated as a philosopher of Nazism. His work inspired a long study by Martin Heidegger and essays by a host of lesser disciples attached to the Third Reich. In 1935, however, Karl Jaspers set out to "marshall against the National Socialists the world of thought of the man they had proclaimed as their own philosopher." The year after Nietzsche was published, Jaspers was discharged from his professorship at Heidelberg University by order of the Nazi leadership. Unlike the ideologues, Jaspers does not selectively cite Nietzsche's work to reinforce already held opinions. Instead, he presents Nietzsche as a complex, wide-ranging philosopher - extraordinary not only because he foresaw all the monstrosities of the twentieth century but also because he saw through them."--BOOK JACKET

Myth and Christianity; an inquiry into the possibility of religion without myth by Karl Jaspers( Book )

26 editions published between 1958 and 2005 in English and German and held by 994 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the world's greatest living philosophers debates with one of the world's foremost theologians an issue of the utmost importance to this generation: Can Christianity survive as a vital force in the modern world? According to Bultmann, leading Protestant existentialist and a practising minister, the traditional religion of the West can best be rescued from skepticism if its "mythological" elements are dropped and only their meanings retained. Jaspers, a found of "Existenz" philosophy, opposes this view and contends that religion without mythology is impossible. In the course of this discussion, a number of basic philosophical, religious and social questions are re-examined, with results that have already had a crucial effect on modern thought

?"Of the countless essays on the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, the complete overview by Karl Jaspers continues to stand out as a unique achievement. Nietzsche is presented as a 'great philosopher' in historical and systematically comprehensive terms. The expert opinion formulated by Jaspers, a psychiatrist, on Nietzsche's illness, which was based on all available medical data, remains of undiminished importance."Prof. Dr. Volker Gerhardt
