Nonverbal communication by Albert Mehrabian( Book )

31 editions published between 1972 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Even though our society subtly discourages the verbal expression of emotions, most of us, in ostensibly conforming to our roles, nevertheless manage to express likes, dislikes, status differences, personalities, as well as weaknesses in nonverbal ways. Using vocal expressions; gestures, postures, and movements, we amplify, restrict, or deny what our words say to one another, and even say some things with greater facility and efficiency than with words. In this new, multidimensional approach to the subject of nonverbal communication Albert Mehrabian brings together a great deal of original work which includes descriptions of new experimental methods that are especially suited to this field, detailed findings of studies scattered throughout the literature, and most importantly, the integration of these findings within a compact framework. The framework starts with the analysis of the meanings of various nonverbal behaviors and is based on the fact that more than half of the variance in the significance of nonverbal signals can be described in terms of the three orthogonal dimensions of positiveness, potency or status, and responsiveness. These three dimensions not only constitute the semantic space for nonverbal communication, but also help to identify groups of behaviors relating to each, to describe characteristic differences in nonverbal communication, to analyze and generate rules for the understanding of inconsistent messages, and to provide researchers with new and comprehensive measures for description of social behavior. This volume will be particularly valuable for both the professional psychologist and the graduate student in psychology. It will also be of great interest to professionals in the fields of speech and communication, sociology, anthropology, and psychiatry
Silent messages by Albert Mehrabian( Book )

22 editions published between 1971 and 1981 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,039 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book examines dimensions of nonverbal human behavior through the "immediacy, ""power," and "responsiveness" metaphors. Human feelings and attitudes as conveyed by variations upon these metaphors involve approach-avoidance behavior. The author defines these metaphors as like-dislike; potency-status (or a controlling versus a dependent submissive attitude); and the extent of awareness of and reactions to another. The book is divided into seven chapters which discuss these social interaction metaphors singularly and in relation to environments, social styles and explicit language. The final chapter contains general applications of these metaphors to the areas of politics, advertising, romance and social alienation. Each chapter is accompanied by a list of suggested readings. Tactics of social influence by Albert Mehrabian( Book )

18 editions published between 1970 and 1971 in English and Spanish and held by 594 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, the principles of behavior modification are presented as a set of guidelines for identifying recurrent behavior patterns and are then applied as techniques to change various undesirable behaviors. Progressively more complex steps toward behavior modification and its social influence are cited and illustrated in chapters which deal with (1) the need for systematic procedures when identifying behavior problems, (2) techniques for breaking down the general statement of a problem into a specific list of components in the situation, (3) the concept of positive and negative reinforcement and some elementary ways that reward and punishment affect significant behavior change, (4) explicit and implicit reinforcers, important in communicating respect and liking, (5) such techniques as forced exposure and desensitization, described as means of modifying the environment to further condition behavior, (6) the time and place for employing techniques which change specifically defined behavior, and (7) the principle of applying modification first to those behaviors which are easiest to change. Basic behavior modification by Albert Mehrabian( Book )

9 editions published between 1975 and 1978 in English and held by 414 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph examines the component parts of behavior modification, initially defining the problem behavior and drawing a difference between specific observable behaviors (the focus of behavior modification), and the interest of Freudian and similar psychologies in unobservable internal processes. Instrumental learning related to shaping in behavior modification, schedules of reinforcement--with an emphasis on variable ratio schedules, extinction, negative reinforcement, positive reinforcement, modeling and prompting, satiation, negative practice and group reinforcement--are discussed as behavior modification techniques. Creating environments conducive to change considers the control of behavior by modifying stimuli likely to influence specific behaviors. Stimulus generalization, discrimination learning, stimulus control (in which dieting and sleeping are offered as examples), reciprocal inhibition, forced exposure desensitization, and rehearsal are discussed from a practical point of view. The final chapter outlines a method of organized approach to difficult problems, and involves (1) the identification of component problems, (2) their ordering in terms of levels of severity, and (3) solution of component problems starting with the easiest and progressing to the most difficult. Notes from the other side of night by Juliana Geran Pilon( )

3 editions published between 2013 and 2017 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Notes from the Other Side of Night is a diary-memoir written upon Juliana Geran Pilon's return to her native Romania in 1975, which she had left along with her family when she was just fourteen. Poetically weaving together modern insight and realities with childhood perceptions, Pilon tells the haunting stories of her parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends. Although the scenery of her native home had remained essentially unchanged since her childhood, Pilon recalls streets that are no more, homes and churches that have been demolished. Yet, the hills and forests, the flowers and mountains, the heat of old Bucharest, remained the same. The scenes and characters described in this book are simply unforgettable. Despite the many tragedies it describes--anti-semitism, political imprisonment, and judicial execution were ruthless realities under communism--Notes from the Other Side of Night is not a depressing book. Pilon writes with a detached melancholy about events and characters that illustrate Hannah Arendt's terrifying "banality of evil." But she remembers, as well, those few who managed to remain human beings until the end. Ultimately, hope triumphs in this memoir. This edition includes a new foreword, which discusses the initial writing and publication of this and previous editions."--Provided by publisher
