Rembrandt creates Rembrandt : art and ambition in Leiden, 1629-1631 by Hilliard T Goldfarb( Book )

10 editions published in 2000 in English and Spanish and held by 419 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If Rembrandt's career had ended in 1631, before the 25-year-old artist moved from his native town of Leiden to the booming metropolis of Amsterdam, how would history remember him? This is the theme of Rembrandt Creates Rembrandt. Rembrandt's work in Leiden was already extraordinarily creative and intensely dramatic. In the years 1629 to 1631, the artist struggled to master different genres and techniques. He worked with Jan Lievens and took his first known pupil, Gerrit Dou. By the time he decided to seek his fortune in Amsterdam, his work had already achieved a unique and profound sense of color, light, and human emotion. Rembrandt Creates Rembrandt includes contributions by Alan Chong, Arthur Wheelock, Christopher White, and Mariët Westermann

Ornament & illusion : Carlo Crivelli of Venice by C. Jean Campbell( Book )

7 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 209 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The work of Carlo Crivelli (c.1435-c.1495), one of the most original artists of the Italian Renaissance, is well represented in the art museums of North America. Although much admired by collectors, artists, and designers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, he has until recently been largely written out of the history of early Renaissance art, is little known to the public, and outside of some rare instances in Italy, has never been the focus of a monographic exhibition. The book, accompanying an exhibition at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, will reevaluate Crivelli s provincial status, presenting him as an experimental artist who provided an alternative to the influential new models of modern painting associated with Florence. He was an artist who aimed to dazzle through a repertoire of spectacular pictorial effects that combined luxuriant ornamental display with bravura illusionism the latter entailing a sophisticated, witty, and sometimes unsettling play with the limits of frames and fictive space

Anders Zorn : a European artist seduces America by Anders Zorn( Book )

6 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

While visiting the Gardners in Boston in 1894, the Swedish artist Anders Zorn made an etching of Mrs. Stewart Gardner, which neither of them considered to be a complete success. One evening, Mrs. Gardner stepped out into the balcony to see what was happening outside, and as she came back into the drawing-room, pushing the French windows open, Zorn exclaimed: "Stay just as you are! That is the way I want to paint you." Stewart Gardner patronized Zorn and promoted his art in the United States. Her support and friendship proved to be crucial to the artist's success in America. Considered to be the most important work by Zorn in the United States, the portrait of Isabella Gardner will form the centrepiece of the exhibition, 'Anders Zorn: A European Artist Seduces America', this publication will be a valuable resource for art historians as well as the general public. 0Exhibition: Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, USA (28.02.-13.05.2013)
Composite landscapes : photomontage and landscape architecture( Book )

6 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Composite Landscapes examines one of landscape architecture's most recognizable representational forms, the montage view. The volume gathers work from a select group of influential contemporary artists and a dozen of the world's leading landscape architects. These composite views reveal practices of photomontage depicting the conceptual, experiential and temporal dimensions of landscape. Composite Landscapes illustrates the analogue origins of a method now rendered ubiquitous through digital means. In revisiting the composite landscape view as a cultural form, this book illuminates the contemporary status of the photographically constructed image for the design disciplines and beyond
