Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám : the astronomer-poet of Persia by
Omar Khayyam(
Book
)
71 editions published between 1800 and 2010 in English and held by 830 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In 1859, Edward FitzGerald translated into English the short, epigrammatic poems of medieval Persian poet Omar Khayyam. If not a true translation--his Omar seems to have read Shakespeare and the King James Bible--the poem nevertheless conveyed some of the most beautiful and haunting images in English poetry, and some of the sharpest-edged. By the end of the century, it was one of the best-known poems in the English language, admired by Swinburne and Ruskin. Daniel Karlin's richly annotated edition focuses on the poem as a work of Victorian literary art, doing justice to the scope and complexity of FitzGerald's lyrical meditation on "human death and fate." Karlin provides a fascinating critical introduction which documents the poem's treatment of its Persian sources, along with its multiple affiliations with English and Classical literature and to the Bible. A selection of contemporary reviews offers an insight into the poem's early reception, including the first attack on its status as a translation. -- Publisher description

8 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and held by 642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"'Abel Fath Omar Bin Al-Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, physician and poet, most famous for his Rubaiyat, one of the classics of world literature. - His work greatly influenced the development of mathematics, particularly analytical geometry, and was unsurpassed for many centuries. - Although he is generally better known as a poet, his work as a philosopher, scientist and mathematician was a major contribution to the growth of human knowledge. - "Omar Al-Khayyam's famous book on algebra and equations is considered to be perhaps his most important contribution to mathematics. The book deals with the solution of quadratic and cubic equations. - Al-Khayyam solved all possible cases of such equations by using geometrical approaches, sometimes involving conic sections, parabolas and hyperbolas. - Historians of science, teachers of mathematics and mathematicians themselves will find the book both interesting and informative."--Jacket

The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám by
Omar Khayyam(
Book
)
131 editions published between 1889 and 2019 in 4 languages and held by 587 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the eleventh century, in Persia, there lived a mathematician named Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim al-Khayyami--or, Omar, son of Abraham, the tent-maker. Omar wrote poetry, and while his rhymes received little attention in their day, they were rediscovered and translated into beautiful English--more than seven centuries later--by a gentleman and scholar named Edward FitzGerald. It was a meeting of minds, a great collaboration of the past and the present, and FitzGerald's rendition of those passionate verses has become one of the best loved poem cycles in the English language. With their concern for the here and now, as opposed to the hereafter, Omar Khayyam's quatrains are as romantic today as they were hundreds of years ago; they are a tribute to the power of one moment's pleasure over a lifetime of sorrow, of desire over the vicissitudes of time. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, presented here with Edward FitzGerald's original preface, is truly a classic, and it will stand forever as one of our finest monuments to love

Edward FitzGerald, Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám : a critical edition by
Omar Khayyam(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 393 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Edward FitzGerald's translation of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, perhaps the most frequently read Victorian poem and certainly one of the most popular poems in the English language, poses formidable challenges to an editor. FitzGerald compulsively revised his work, alternately swayed by friends' advice, importuned by his publisher's commercial interests, and encouraged by public acclaim. In consequence, the editor is faced with four published editions as well as manuscript and proof versions of the poem. Christopher Decker's critical edition of the Rubaiyat is the first to publish all extant states of the poems and to unearth a full record of its complicated textual evolution."--BOOK JACKET. "Decker supplies a rich interpretive context for the Rubaiyat that reveals how its composition was so often a collaborative enterprise. His view of poetic creativity comprehends recent theories of the sociology of texts and challenges the common assumption that the desired product of a critical edition is a single unified text of a literary work. He illuminates the complex process of revision by providing a textual appendix in which a comparative printing lays down each stratum of FitzGerald's composition. Biographical and textual introductions, making imaginative use of FitzGerald's correspondence, trace the history of the poem and pay special attention to FitzGerald's motives for revising, for creating a variously beautiful work in verse."--Jacket
