The present book is an outgrowth of public lectures and destined for the general reader; it contains few detailed references, but there is a select bibliography at the end (comprising only English titles, but among them some works translated from other languages). The author treats successively the three main aspects of "Islam as a way of life": Islam the Religion (pp. 1-69), Islam the State (pp. 71-103, essentially limited to the history of the Caliphate till 1258, not including the spread of Islam in India and farther eastward), Islam the Culture (pp. 105-18).
