The author treats successively the three main aspects of "Islam as a way of life": Islam the Religion (p. 1-69), Islam the State (p. 71-103, essentially limited to the history of the Caliphate till 1258, not including the spread of Islam in India and farther eastward), Islam the Culture (p. 105-18). Under religion the author treats jurisprudence, theology, and Sufism; under politics, the Caliphal state in Medina, Damascus, and Baghdad. The Culture of Islam includes science, philosophy, and literature, with a final chapter on "Confrontation with Modernity."

The life of Usâmah ibn-Munqidh epitomizes the height of Arab civilization during the early Crusading period. These memoirs -- which represent a rare first-hand account of medieval European manners, morals, politics, and medicine written by a non-European -- offers new perspective and insight into an important point of military and cultural contact between the East and West. In his introduction, translator Philip Hitti writes, "Ancient Arabic literature has preserved for us other biographies, memoirs, and reminiscences by great men, but there is hardly anything superior to this one in its simplicity of narrative, dignity, and wealth of contents and general human interest

"This book contains the autobiographical works of Usama ibn Munqidh, a twelfth-century Arab aristocrat. Full of detail, wit and melancholy, Usama's narrative anecdotes illustrate the inscrutability of God's will in life, as well as providing a memorable record of Islam's long encounter with the Crusaders, known to Usama only as the Franks. This edition focuses on The Book of Contemplation, but also uses extracts from The Book of the Staff and Kernels of Refinement to produce a complete and human portrayal of Islamic perspectives on day-to-day existence, warfare, and the curious European invaders
