African politics in comparative perspective by Göran Hydén( Book )

41 editions published between 2000 and 2016 in English and held by 891 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This revised and expanded second edition of African Politics in Comparative Perspective reviews fifty years of research on politics in Africa and addresses some issues in a new light, keeping in mind the changes in Africa since the first edition was written in 2004. The book synthesizes insights from different scholarly approaches and offers an original interpretation of the knowledge accumulated in the field. Goran Hyden discusses how research on African politics relates to the study of politics in other regions and mainstream theories in comparative politics. He focuses on such key issues as why politics trumps economics, rule is personal, state is weak and policies are made with a communal rather than an individual lens. The book also discusses why in the light of these conditions agriculture is problematic, gender contested, ethnicity manipulated and relations with Western powers a matter of defiance"--

Making sense of governance : empirical evidence from sixteen developing countries by Göran Hydén( Book )

12 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although governance has been the focus of a considerable body of literature on democratic transitions and consolidation, data to support the claim that the concept is a useful one has been lacking. Now however, Making Sense of Governance clearly shows the utility of research on governance, presenting empirical evidence from sixteen developing countries. The authors focus on six arenas: civil, political, and economic society and the executive, bureaucracy, and judiciary. Demonstrating conclusively for the first time that perceptions of governance by local stakeholders are realistic indicators of the nature and quality of a political regime, they also reveal the dynamic nature of governance and to what extent it correlates with socioeconomic variables. This comprehensive study is based on interviews in Argentina, Bulgaria, Chile, China, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Tanzania, Thailand, and Togo. This book shows the utility of research on governance, presenting empirical evidence from 16 developing countries; in six arenas: civil, political, and economic society and the executive, bureaucracy, and judiciary

10 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In contrast to the bulk of the literature on foreign and, which deals with it as an instrument of foreign policy or centres on problems of implementing it effectively, this book examines the role of the aid agencies themselves. By starting from a recipient's perspective, and providing a longitudinal as well as comparative analysis, the contributors demonstrate the problems that these agencies have brought to foreign aid operations."--Jacket

Power and policy slippage in Tanzania : discussing national ownership of development by Göran Hydén( Book )

8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study of mainland Tanzania shows that power is centralised and significantly influenced by development partners. Power is also dispersed among patronage-oriented individuals who fail to coordinate or act in a strategic manner in order to realise the common objectives stated in strategic development documents and declarations. The study proposes how analysis and monitoring of power could be conducted in more systematic ways. It offers a set of proposals for local actors and development partners that would help bring a more equal character to their relationships. There are ways in which civil society and state institutions could enter into a competitive and constructive relationship under the auspices of national ownership of the development process. The conclusion discusses how power analyses can be used by development partners and partner institutions alike
