The changing landscape in Eastern Europe : a personal perspective on philanthropy and technology transfer by
Richard E Quandt(
Book
)
14 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Throughout the 1990s, attempts by the Eastern European nations to integrate themselves into the world economy risked foundering on inexperience, corruption, and wellintentioned but wrongheaded economic strategy." "How does one help remake a society from the ground up, not in one's own image, but in such a way as to integrate democratic and free market ideals with the extant culture? How is such change best orchestrated without falling prey to obstructionist traditions on the one hand and an excessively paternalistic mindset on the other? What role can indeed must philanthropy and the transfer of allimportant technologies play in bringing about this change?" "Quandt's story here is about more than simply throwing money at problems. Rather it is a tale of a grassroots approach that blended Western ideals with an understanding of and a tolerance for values, goals, work habits, and implementation strategies that often clashed with Western preconceptions. The communist system actively discouraged cooperation, fearing that alliances among likeminded groups could engender opposition and organized resistance to the entrenched status quo. Stressing cooperation as a vital social good, Quandt details how foundational elements such as civil society, higher education and research, agricultural efficiency, environmental awareness, and legal reform are best engineered, demonstrating in compelling narrative detail what factors aided and which obstructed success."Jacket

Endogenous output in an aggregate model of the labor market by
Richard E Quandt(
Book
)
5 editions published between 1988 and 1989 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A common feature to most aggregative studies of the labor market is a marginal productivity expression in which the quantity of labor appears on the left hand side of the equation, and the right hand side includes the real wage and output. A number of researchers have cautioned that if the output variable is treated as exogenous, serious econometric difficulties may result. However, the assumption that output is exogenous has not been tested. In this paper, we estimate an equilibrium model of the labor market, and use it to test the assumption of output exogeneity. We find that the assumption that output is exogenous cannot be rejected by the data

Unemployment, disequilibrium, and the short run Phillips curve : an econometric approach by
Richard E Quandt(
Book
)
12 editions published between 1985 and 1986 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The paper specifies a disequilibrium model for the aggregate labor market consisting of demand and supply functions for labor, an adjustment equation for wages as well as for prices, a transactions equation and, finally, an equation that relates measured unemployment to vacancies and to excess demand. The model has a more sophisticated treatment of dynamics than earlier disequilibrium models, and uses measured unemployment as an endogenous variable. Two of the error terms are assumed to be serially correlated and the coefficients are estimated by maximum likelihood. The parameter estimates and the goodnessoffit are satisfactory and the model's implications for the behavior of several important variables are sensible. Excess demand estimates computed in various ways are reasonable. The model is used to estimate the natural rate of unemployment as well as a short run Phillips curve. Finally, the stability properties ofthe model are analyzed by considering the eigenvalues of the system; they are found to have moduli less than one

Is there chronic excess supply of labor? : Designing a statistical test by
Richard E Quandt(
Book
)
6 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this paper we present and implement a statistical test of the hypothesis that the labor market has chronic excess supply. The procedure is to estimate a disequilibrium labor market model, and construct a test statistic based on the unconditional probability that there is excess supply each period. We find that the data reject the hypothesis of chronic excess supply. Hence, one cannot assume that all observations lie on the demand curve
