13 editions published between 1967 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 207 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This is a documentary reflection on the last 27 years of Johann Sebastian Bach's life. Straub and Huillet are not prepared to speculate on motivation and personal lives beyond what is revealed in available documents. Bach's life is presented principally through his music in performance by 20th century musicians in 18th century mode. The economic and social context is provided by the narration (mainly Anna Magdalena's monologue) derived chiefly from Bach's letters and necrology written by one of his sons presented in the original form of the language. Implicit in Straub's approach is the position that dramatic re-enactment of historical material is inherently deceptive. The view of Bach as an uncompromising artist hampered by society emerges through the film's discursiveness
