Adviser, teacher, role model, friend : on being a mentor to students in science and engineering by Institute of Medicine (U. S.)( )

4 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 2,157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This guide is meant to assist mentors and advisors in understanding how they might help students identify and respond to the challenges of becoming scientists or engineers. The guide--intended for faculty members, teachers, administrators, and others who advise and mentor students of science and engineering--attempts to summarize features that are common to successful mentoring relationships. The goal is to encourage mentoring habits that are in the best interests of both parties in the relationship. The chapters define mentoring, explain the different roles the mentor plays with students (faculty advisor, career advisor, skills consultant, role model), makes recommendations for improving the quality of mentoring, and provides resources. Within each chapter, the text contains steps to improve mentoring, examples of poor and good mentoring, the context of mentoring, a sample of nonacademic careers in science and engineering, and chapter summaries. When Cleveland's Cuyahoga River caught fire in 1969, no environmental measurements were necessary to know the seriousness of the problem. Incidents like the Cuyahoga fire raise an important question: Can catastrophes-in-the-making be detected early enough
The hydrogen economy : opportunities, costs, barriers, and R & D needs by National Research Council (U.S.)( )

9 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 2,010 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The National Academies' National Research Council appointed the Committee on Alternatives and Strategies for Future Hydrogen Production and Use in the fall of 2002 to address the complex subject of the "hydrogen economy." In particular, the committee carried out these tasks: Assessed the current state of technology for producing hydrogen from a variety of energy sources; Made estimates on a consistent basis of current and future projected costs, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and energy efficiencies for hydrogen technologies; Considered scenarios for the potential penetration of hydrogen into the economy and associated impacts on oil imports and CO2 gas emissions; Addressed the problem of how hydrogen might be distributed, stored, and dispensed to end uses -- together with associated infrastructure issues -- with particular emphasis on light-duty vehicles in the transportation sector; Reviewed the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) research, development, and demonstration (RD & D) plan for hydrogen; and Made recommendations to the DOE on RD & D, including directions, priorities, and strategies. - Executive summary
The Industrial green game : implications for environmental design and management by National Academy of Engineering( )

6 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 2,000 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Industrial ecology is a field of study that provides a basis for sound environmental decision making in government and industry. It provides a framework for designing products, processes, and management strategies and systems that avoid environmental damage. Knowledge about the operation of industrial systems and how they may be modified provides the basis for improving the environmental quality of systems of production and consumption. What industrial ecology is and how it may be applied to corporate environmental practices are the subject of The Industrial Green Game. The volume examines industrial circulation of materials, energy efficiency strategies, "green" accounting, life-cycle analysis, and other approaches for preventing pollution and improving performance. The Industrial Green Game looks at issues of special concern to business, such as measuring and shaping public perceptions and marketing "green" products to consumers. The volume also offers discussions of the appropriate roles of government and private business

Real prospects for energy efficiency in the United States by National Academy of Scien( )

12 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 1,719 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"America's economy and lifestyles have been shaped by the low prices and availability of energy. In the last decade, however, the prices of oil, natural gas, and coal have increased dramatically, leaving consumers and the industrial and service sectors looking for ways to reduce energy use. To achieve greater energy efficiency, we need technology, more informed consumers and producers, and investments in more energy-efficient industrial processes, businesses, residences, and transportation. As part of the America's Energy Future project, Real Prospects for Energy Efficiency in the United States examines the potential for reducing energy demand through improving efficiency by using existing technologies, technologies developed but not yet utilized widely, and prospective technologies. The book evaluates technologies based on their estimated times to initial commercial deployment, and provides an analysis of costs, barriers, and research needs. This quantitative characterization of technologies will guide policy makers toward planning the future of energy use in America. This book will also have much to offer to industry leaders, investors, environmentalists, and others looking for a practical diagnosis of energy efficiency possibilities."--Page 4 of cover
