The Positive sum strategy : harnessing technology for economic growth by Ralph Landau( Book )

9 editions published between 1985 and 1989 in English and Undetermined and held by 597 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Technology may be thought of as an extroverted activity involving a search for workable solutions to problems. The output of technology tends to take the form of a tangible product or service. Science, by contrast, is generally introverted, studying problems that are usually generated internally. As technology has become increasingly sophisticated, it has become increasingly dependent on the findings and processes of science. Markets are the basic institutional framework within which new technologies are evaluated. Long-term economic growth relies on the performance of new technologies within this framework. This volume presents chapters by engineers and economists in the hope that the exchange between these groups would lead to a better understanding of the conditions under which technological innovation can be made to function more effectively in the generation of economic growth. The 41 essays included here are organized under the following topics: (1) "Technology and the Dynamics of Economic Growth"; (2) "Policy, Law, Science, and Education: The Framework of Technological Change"; (3) "The Economics of Innovation"; (4) "The Organization of Technological Advance: Entrepreneurship and the Management of Innovation"; (5) "Financing Innovation"; and (6) "Technology and International Economic Competition." The roles of universities, industries, and governmental agencies are considered. (Cw)

Hazards : technology and fairness by Symposium on Hazards: Technology and Fairness( Book )

6 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the burgeoning literature on technological hazards, this volume is one of the best," states Choice in a three-part approach, it addresses the moral, scientific, social, and commercial questions inherent in hazards management. Part I discusses how best to regulate hazards arising from chronic, low-level exposures and from low-probability events when science is unable to assign causes or estimate consequences of such hazards; Part II examines fairness in the distribution of risks and benefits of potentially hazardous technologies; and Part III presents practical lessons and cautions about managing hazardous technologies. Together, the three sections put hazard management into perspective, providing a broad spectrum of views and information. The papers in this volume define some important issues in hazard management that are emerging during this national reexamination of our environmental policies. The authors urge the reader to recognize that successful management of technological hazards increasingly depends on resolution of these issues
The hydrogen economy : opportunities, costs, barriers, and R & D needs by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

9 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 439 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The National Academies' National Research Council appointed the Committee on Alternatives and Strategies for Future Hydrogen Production and Use in the fall of 2002 to address the complex subject of the "hydrogen economy." In particular, the committee carried out these tasks: Assessed the current state of technology for producing hydrogen from a variety of energy sources; Made estimates on a consistent basis of current and future projected costs, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and energy efficiencies for hydrogen technologies; Considered scenarios for the potential penetration of hydrogen into the economy and associated impacts on oil imports and CO2 gas emissions; Addressed the problem of how hydrogen might be distributed, stored, and dispensed to end uses -- together with associated infrastructure issues -- with particular emphasis on light-duty vehicles in the transportation sector; Reviewed the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) research, development, and demonstration (RD & D) plan for hydrogen; and Made recommendations to the DOE on RD & D, including directions, priorities, and strategies. - Executive summary

Adviser, teacher, role model, friend : on being a mentor to students in science and engineering by Institute of Medicine (U.S.)( Book )

4 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This guide is meant to assist mentors and advisors in understanding how they might help students identify and respond to the challenges of becoming scientists or engineers. The guide--intended for faculty members, teachers, administrators, and others who advise and mentor students of science and engineering--attempts to summarize features that are common to successful mentoring relationships. The goal is to encourage mentoring habits that are in the best interests of both parties in the relationship. The chapters define mentoring, explain the different roles the mentor plays with students (faculty advisor, career advisor, skills consultant, role model), makes recommendations for improving the quality of mentoring, and provides resources. Within each chapter, the text contains steps to improve mentoring, examples of poor and good mentoring, the context of mentoring, a sample of nonacademic careers in science and engineering, and chapter summaries. Real prospects for energy efficiency in the United States( Book )

11 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 285 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"America's economy and lifestyles have been shaped by the low prices and availability of energy. In the last decade, however, the prices of oil, natural gas, and coal have increased dramatically, leaving consumers and the industrial and service sectors looking for ways to reduce energy use. To achieve greater energy efficiency, we need technology, more informed consumers and producers, and investments in more energy-efficient industrial processes, businesses, residences, and transportation. As part of the America's Energy Future project, Real Prospects for Energy Efficiency in the United States examines the potential for reducing energy demand through improving efficiency by using existing technologies, technologies developed but not yet utilized widely, and prospective technologies. The book evaluates technologies based on their estimated times to initial commercial deployment, and provides an analysis of costs, barriers, and research needs. This quantitative characterization of technologies will guide policy makers toward planning the future of energy use in America. This book will also have much to offer to industry leaders, investors, environmentalists, and others looking for a practical diagnosis of energy efficiency possibilities."--Page 4 of cover
