Structural anthropology by Claude Lévi-Strauss( Book )

422 editions published between 1919 and 2016 in 12 languages and held by 5,334 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lévi-Strauss is not only one of the extremely few scholars of sufficient distinction to be able to say, without presumption, what social anthropology is about; but he has also actually demonstrated ... that he is pre-eminently worth listening to. He does not simply practice social anthropology, he makes exciting and original contributions to it. This book provides an introduction to his distinctive approach to anthropology as the study of a science of general principles. The now renowned "structural method," which has changed the face of social anthropology, views man and society in terms of universals--kinship, social organization, religion and mythology, and art
The savage mind by Claude Lévi-Strauss( Book )

308 editions published between 1962 and 2018 in 13 languages and held by 4,152 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author demonstrates how each culture has its own system of the concepts and categories derived from experience and imposed by the surrounding natural world. Through the order in the naming of plants and animals, concepts of space and time, myths and rituals, primitive societies engage in a high level of abstract reasoning different from but not necessarily inferior to that involved in cultivated "systematic thought."

From honey to ashes by Claude Lévi-Strauss( Book )

61 editions published between 1966 and 2009 in 6 languages and held by 1,865 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We are all cannibals and other essays by Claude Lévi-Strauss( )

15 editions published between 2016 and 2018 in English and held by 1,499 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"On Christmas Eve 1951, Santa Claus was hanged and then publicly burned outside of the Cathedral of Dijon in France. That same decade, ethnologists began to study the indigenous cultures of central New Guinea, and found men and women affectionately consuming the flesh of the ones they loved. "Everyone calls what is not their own custom barbarism," said Montaigne. In these essays, Claude Lévi-Strauss shows us behavior that is bizarre, shocking, and even revolting to outsiders but consistent with a people's culture and context. These essays relate meat eating to cannibalism, female circumcision to medically assisted reproduction, and mythic thought to scientific thought. They explore practices of incest and patriarchy, nature worship versus man-made material obsessions, the perceived threat of art in various cultures, and the innovations and limitations of secular thought. Lévi-Strauss measures the short distance between "complex" and "primitive" societies and finds a shared madness in the ways we enact myth, ritual, and custom. Yet he also locates a pure and persistent ethics that connects the center of Western civilization to far-flung societies and forces a reckoning with outmoded ideas of morality and reason."--Publisher information

The origin of table manners by Claude Lévi-Strauss( Book )

62 editions published between 1968 and 2009 in 5 languages and held by 1,480 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The jealous potter by Claude Lévi-Strauss( Book )

As Levi-Strauss freely explores the mythologies of the Americas, with occasional incursions into European and Japanese folklore, tales of sloths and squirrels interweave with discussions of Freud, Saussure, "signification," and plays by Sophocles and Labiche. Inuit stories of being and rebirth : gender, shamanism, and the third sex by Bernard Saladin d'Anglure( )

9 editions published between 2006 and 2019 in English and French and held by 1,149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The small island of Igloolik lies between the Melville Peninsula and Baffin Island at the northern end of Hudson Bay north of the Arctic Circle. It has fascinated many in the Western world since 1824, when a London publisher printed the narratives by William Parry and his second-in-command, George Lyon, about their two years spent looking for the mythical Northwest Passage. Nearly a hundred and fifty years later, Bernard Saladin d'Anglure arrived in Igloolik, hoping to complete the study he had been conducting for nearly six months in Arctic Quebec (present-day Nunavik). He was supposed to spend a month on Igloolik, but on his first morning there, Saladin d'Anglure met the elders Ujarak and Iqallijuq. He learned that they had been informants for Knud Rasmussen in 1922. Moreover, they had spent most of their lives in the camps and fully remembered the pre-Christian period. Ujarak and Iqallijuq soon became Saladin d'Anglure's friends and initiated him into the symbolism, myths, beliefs, and ancestral rules of the local Inuit. With them and their families, Saladin d'Anglure would work for thirty years, gathering the oral traditions of their people. First published in French in 2006, Inuit Stories of Being and Rebirth contains an in-depth, paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of stories on womb memories, birth, namesaking, and reincarnation. This new English edition introduces this material to a broader audience and contains a new afterword by Saladin d'Anglure."--
The story of Lynx by Claude Lévi-Strauss( Book )

44 editions published between 1991 and 2009 in 5 languages and held by 1,087 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this wide-ranging work, the master of structural anthropology considers the many variations in a story that occurs in both North and South America, but especially among the Salish-speaking peoples of the Northwest Coast. He also shows how centuries of contract with Europeans have altered the tales. Levi-Strauss focuses on the opposition between Wild Cat and Coyote to explore the meaning and uses of gemellarity, or twinness, in Native American culture. The concept of dual organization that these tales exemplify is one of non-equivalence: everything has an opposite or other, with which it coexists in unstable tension. In contrast, Levi-Strauss argues, European notions of twinness - as in the myth of Castor and Pollux - stress the essential sameness of the twins. This fundamental cultural difference lay behind the fatal clash of European and Native American peoples. The Story of Lynx addresses and clarifies all the major issues that have occupied Levi-Strauss for decades, and is the only one of his books in which he explicitly connects history and structuralism. The result is a work that will appeal to those interested in American Indian mythology. It will be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the thought of one of the most important and influential minds of the twentieth century

Race et histoire by Claude Lévi-Strauss( Book )
