On the sensations of tone as a physiological basis for the theory of music by Hermann von Helmholtz( Book )

126 editions published between 1875 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 2,249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the present work an attempt will be made to connect the boundaries of two sciences, which, although drawn towards each other by many natural affinities, have hitherto remained practically distinct--I mean the boundaries of physical and physiological acoustics on the one side, and of musical science and esthetics on the other. I endeavor to collect and arrange such materials for the theory of the sensations of hearing as already existed. The First Part of the following investigation is essentially physical and physiological. It contains a general investigation of the phenomenon of harmonic upper partial tones. The Second Part treats of the disturbances produced by the simultaneous production of two tones, namely the combinational tones and beats. In these first two Parts of the book, no attention is paid to esthetic considerations. Natural phenomena obeying a blind necessity, are alone treated. The Third Part treats of the construction of musical scales and notes. Here we come at once upon esthetic ground, and the differences of national and individual tastes begin to appear"--Book. "The favour with which the first series of Professor Helmholtz's Lectures has been received would justify, if a justification were needed, the publication of the present volume. I have to express my acknowledgments to Professor G. Croome Robertson, the editor, and to Messrs. Macmillan, the publishers of 'Mind, ' for permission to use a translation of the paper on the 'Axioms of Modern Geometry' which appeared in that journal. The article on 'Academic Freedom in German Universities' contains some statements respecting the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge to which exception has been taken. These statements were a fair representation of the impression produced on the mind of a foreigner by a state of things which no longer exists in those Universities, at least to the same extent. The reform in the University system, which may be said to date from the year 1854, has brought about so many alterations both in the form and in the spirit of the regulations, that older members of the University have been known to speak of the place as so changed that they could scarcely recognise it. Hence, in respect of this article, I have availed myself of the liberty granted by Professor Helmholtz, and have altogether omitted some passages, and have slightly modified others, which would convey an erroneous impression of the present state of things. I have also on these points consulted members of the University on whose judgment I think I can rely. In other articles, where the matter is of prime importance, I have been anxious faithfully to reproduce the original; nor have I in any such cases allowed a regard for form to interfere with the plain duty of exactly rendering the author's meaning"--Preface. Helmholtz's treatise on physiological optics by Hermann von Helmholtz( Book )

21 editions published between 1924 and 2000 in English and held by 552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Helmholtz' 'Popular Scientific Lectures' have spread his fame far and wide among educated people everywhere. While he was professor at Heidelberg and still a comparatively young man, nearly three-score years ago he composed the preface to the first edition of his monumental work on light and vision, in all their intricate and manifold relations to each other; and already considerably more than a decade has passed since the publication of the posthumous third edition of the Physiologische Optik which was brought up to date and greatly enlarged under the collaboration of Nagel, Gullstrant and v. Kries. Yet in all these years there has been no English translation of this great classical treatise; and unfortunately no similar work in English of any kind. It is interesting to note that both Young and Helmholtz, the two great pioneers in Physiological Optics, started on their careers in the medical profession, and each of them afterwards gained his greatest renown in Physics. Apart from its own intrinsic value, the treatise on Physiological Optics is a model of scientific method and logical procedure that has hardly ever been excelled in these respects"--Préface. In Handbuch der physiologischen Optik Herman von Helmholtz (1821-1894) "investigated the optical contents of the eye, measured by his invention, the ophthalmometer, the radii of curvature of the crystalline lens for near and far vision, explained the mechanism of accomodation by which the eye can focus within certain limits, discussed the phenomena of color vision and gave a clear account of the movements of the eyeballs so as to secure single vision with two eyes. In particular he revived and gave new force to the theory of color vision associated with the name of Thomas Young, showing the three primary colors to be red, green and violet, and he applied the theory to the explanation of color blindness" (Enc. Brit.)."
