Life and times of Colonel Daniel Boone, comprising history of the early settlement of Kentucky by Cecil B Hartley( )

4 editions published between 1860 and 2006 in English and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This detailed biography of Boone places great emphasis on the woodsman's role in the early settlement of Kentucky. Several chapters describe Boone's often solo exploration of the land, his work cutting a trail and leading the first groups of settlers into the state, and his leadership at Boonesborough, the first settlement in Kentucky. The book also chronicles Boone's later life, when he was stripped of the lands he surveyed and dwelt in comfortable obscurity in Missouri. While Hartley sometimes embroiders Boone's life to make history sound more romantic and exciting, this book is accompanied by numerous illustrations such as Daniel Boone's initiation as a member of a Shawnee community. This volume also includes a copy of John Filson's first biography of Boone

Daniel Boone's Own Story & The Adventures of Daniel Boone by Daniel Boone( )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Many dark and sleepless nights have I been a companion for owls, separated from the cheerful society of men, scorched by the summer's sun and pinched by the winter's cold-an instrument ordained to settle the wilderness." Motivated by a powerful sense of purpose, Daniel Boone blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap. Thousands followed, settling in Boonesborough, Kentucky, to form one of the first English-speaking communities west of the Appalachians. This two-part tale of the legendary frontiersman's life begins with a brief profile by Boone himself, covering his exploits in the Kentucky wilderness from 1769 to 1784. The second part chronicles Boone's life from cradle to grave, with exciting accounts of his capture and adoption by Shawnee Indians and his service as a militiaman during the Revolutionary War

When John Filson printed this book about the newly settled "country" of Kentucky, the United States Constitution had not been written and Kentucky was still part of Virginia. Filson's description of the Kentucky countryside and the accompanying map helped increase interest in settlement in the region. Also significant is Filson's account of "the adventures of Col. Daniel Boone." This biography of the famed woodsman was written by Filson based on conversations he had with Boone himself. Filson wrote the "adventures" in the first person, as though Boone was the one writing the book. This biography introduced Boone and his exploits to a wide audience of American and European readers and served to increase his fame and stature
