Host relations of the parasitic cowbirds by Herbert Friedmann( Book )

12 editions published between 1963 and 1979 in English and held by 320 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Cowbirds are an ideal group in which to study the biology of brood parasitism; within the six included species there are displayed all stages of the development of this mode of reproduction ranging from that of the non-parasitic bay-wing through those of the completely parasitic screaming, shiny, brown-headed, bronzed, and giant cowbirds. The present report deals only with their host relationships, as this is the aspect of their biology in which our knowledge has shown the greatest increase since the author's discussion was published in 1929
The evolutionary history of the avian genus Chrysococcyx by Herbert Friedmann( Book )

11 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The genus Chrysococcyx is one of a number of genera of cuckoos that are brood parasites in their reproductive habits. Their phylogeny, differentiation, dispersal, and ethology -- all of which are reviewed in a comparative, yet detailed, way for the first time in this paper -- are of interest in themselves not only as a special "case history" in the development of parasitism, but also for the light they throw on the broad, general problems of evolution of parasitic reproduction in the cuckoos as a family and in birds in general
