Woodrow Wilson and the politics of morality by John Morton Blum( Book )

21 editions published between 1956 and 1990 in English and held by 1,850 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Woodrow Wilson came to political power in the United States at a time when many Americans were troubled by a seeming contradiction between the inherent premises and promises of American life and reality. For, as the nineteenth century gave way to the complexities of the twentieth, government was too often characterized by an ineffectiveness in dealing with international tensions and by an inability to resolve internal stress. To these problems Wilson brought the Christian morality and nineteenth-century liberalism of his Presbyterian background and genteel education. He developed an inspirational faith in the powers of a new morality to lead men to find and correct the maladies of the body politic and, indeed, of the world itself. He led Congress to great achievements and his party to large triumphs. And while his inflexibility caused him to fail in his hopes for his greatest project, the League of Nations, his failure was for that time only, as history has since made abundantly clear. -- from Book Jacket
The progressive Presidents : Roosevelt, Wilson, Roosevelt, Johnson by John Morton Blum( Book )

10 editions published between 1980 and 1982 in English and held by 1,497 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Advocates of a strong versus a weak presidency have struggled throughout American history, but never so fiercely as in the twentieth century, which saw the rise of progressivism. This is the story of four progressive presidents, from the first Roosevelt, who himself brought plenty of backbone to the office, to Woodrow Wilson, who articulated the theory of a progressive presidency, to FDR, who brought it unique power, and finally, to Lyndon Johnson, who provided perhaps its last great surge in our century. In a time of progressive malaise, it is important to know the history, to see the benefits as well as the liabilities, in the progressive presidential tradition. That is the aim and achievement of this book. --From cover

This spoof of documentary films stars Woody Allen as Leonard Zelig, the famous "Chameleon Man" of the 1920's, whose personality was so vague he would assume the characteristics of whomever he came into contact with. Filmed in black-and-white, the movie simulates the look of a newsreel, complete with stentorian narration
