This book provides a sequence of 10 skill-building games and follow-up activities (beginning with "Getting Acquainted" and ending with "Arriving at a Consensus") designed to give students necessary practice in proper discussion techniques. Fifteen remedial exercises to treat such weaknesses as extreme aggressiveness or a habit of straying from the topic are also included. The book is designed to help secondary school teachers "train their students to participate more effectively in discussions that are generally not teacher-directed and in which either the goals or the means toward the goals are not specified by the teacher." A chapter entitled "On Your Own" encourages teachers to develop their own techniques for improving group discussions and contains a list of 22 books and articles on the subject. Two introductory chapters take up the types and purposes of discussion. (Dd)

A guidebook for teaching composition by Gene Stanford( Book )

6 editions published between 1977 and 1982 in English and held by 350 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In contrast to many books that outline in a general way the "best" method for teaching composition and that suggest a few exercises to implement it, this guidebook on expository writing attempts to be comprehensive and emphasizes practicality. Chapters deal with how to organize a composition program, how to mark student papers, and how to teach expository paragraphs, essays, research papers, and skills of revision. For each type of writing that it deals with, the guidebook provides instructional objectives, notes for brief presentations to explain new concepts to the class, classroom activities, discussion questions, small group activities, projects, individual assignments, annotated lists of useful books and audiovisual materials, and sample evaluation items. An additional feature of the book is the section of "reproduction pages," which can be used to make masters for spirit duplication or transparencies for an overhead projector. Although the book often suggests a sequence of activities that might be useful in teaching a particular skill, the teacher is not locked into prescribed lesson plans. (Ljr)

The twenty-four articles in this collection focus on the problems presented by the increasing numbers of exceptional students with whom the English classroom teacher must deal: physically, emotionally, and mentally handicapped; nonnative speakers of English; nontraditional students; speakers of nonstandard dialects; the gifted and talented; and alienated, disenchanted, and unmotivated learners. The articles are divided into four sections: (1) responses to mainstreaming, (2) students facing obstacles to learning, (3) minority students and nonnative speakers of English, and (4) students who need special challenges (the gifted/talented). Thinking through language, book two by Barbara Dodds Stanford( Book )

2 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of three related documents produced in response to a need for direct instruction in thinking skills at the secondary level, this program for high school students bases its approach on involvement of students in direct experiences. Designed to build on the thinking skills that the student already possesses and, ideally, on the experience gained in Book One, it provides training in analytical skills as well as systematic development of intuitive skills. In the first unit, students explore perception and the way the mind guides, focuses, and organizes perception, and they begin to reflect on their own thought processes. In the second unit, three kinds of relationships and connections are explored: comparisons (especially metaphor and analogy), whole/part relationships, and the creation of new relationships. The third unit directs students in learning to distinguish between scientific problems and interpersonal problems and to improve their problem-solving skills with both types of problems. The fourth unit directs students to explore the creative aspects of the thinking process by reading about the experience of creation from creative thinkers and to stimulate their own creative powers by using activities based on research.
