Poems & translations, 1850-1870 : together with the prose story Hand and soul by Dante Gabriel Rossetti( Book )

192 editions published between 1869 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 1,907 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First printed in the short-lived Pre-Raphaelite publication The Germ, Rossetti's early short story "Hand and Soul" tells the fictional story of an early Renaissance painter who is depressed by the failure of his art to improve the world. The painter has a vision that his own soul comes to him in the form of a beautiful woman and instructs him to paint her likeness. In doing so, the painter paints his own soul, by which Rossetti reveals that an artist should produce work which reflects his own emotions and imagination. "Hand and Soul" was chosen by William Morris to be re-printed by his Kelmscott Press, which produced beautiful, hand-printed books. Morris was closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites and went on to found the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain
Collected poetry and prose by Dante Gabriel Rossetti( )

14 editions published between 2003 and 2008 in English and held by 1,809 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A major poet, writer and painter, Dante Gabriel Rossetti was seen as the dominating cultural presence in the second half of the 19th century. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite movement, revised and re-imagined Blake's project of marrying images and texts, and was a shaping influence on Modernist aesthetic ideas and practices. His translations are original poetical works in their own right. Jerome McGann, scholar of the 19th and 20th century, presents a selection of Rossetti's poetry, prose and original translations. The collection is accompanied by McGann's commentaries and notes

Few collections of verse have been associated with such drama as these poems by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–82). Much of this work had disappeared in 1862 when it was buried with Rossetti's wife, Elizabeth Siddal, only to be brought back to the light of day in 1869. Rossetti added further poems and the work first appeared in 1870. The full impact of the sexually explicit material was soon felt. In his article 'The Fleshly School of Poetry', the writer Robert Williams Buchanan denounced Rossetti as corrupt and decadent. Others joined the chorus of disapproving voices. Steeped in remorse about his treatment of his wife, and riddled with guilt about his affair with Jane Morris, Rossetti broke down and attempted suicide. Behind all the sensation, however, lies Rossetti's subtle and complex literary intelligence attempting, many years before Freud, to find honest modes of expression for the central importance of the libido

Poet and painter, founder and acknowledged leader of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) has beguiled and intrigued admirers for more than a century with his turbulent life and his romantic imagery. Rossetti, the English-born son of an Italian political refugee and brother of the poet Christina Rossetti, considered a career as a poet before seeking his fortune as an artist - and succeeding in both occupations. Unable to adapt to the discipline of formal art training, Rossetti ultimately developed a personal style that placed him at the forefront of the Victorian artistic world. Forty of Rossetti's finest works are reproduced here in large, full-color plates and accompanied by individual commentaries. An illustrated introductory text traces the details of Rossetti's fascinating life and career and sets his art in the context of his day
