Windows into the soul : surveillance and society in an age of high technology by Gary T Marx( Book )

9 editions published between 2012 and 2017 in English and Italian and held by 677 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We live in an age saturated with surveillance. Our personal and public lives are increasingly on display for governments, merchants, employers, hackers--and the merely curious--to see. In Windows into the Soul, Gary T. Marx, a central figure in the rapidly expanding field of surveillance studies, argues that surveillance itself is neither good nor bad, but that context and comportment make it so. In this landmark book, Marx sums up a lifetime of work on issues of surveillance and social control by disentangling and parsing the empirical richness of watching and being watched. Using fictional narratives as well as the findings of social science, Marx draws on decades of studies of covert policing, computer profiling, location and work monitoring, drug testing, caller identification, and much more, Marx gives us a conceptual language to understand the new realities and his work clearly emphasizes the paradoxes, trade-offs, and confusion enveloping the field. Windows into the Soul shows how surveillance can penetrate our social and personal lives in profound, and sometimes harrowing, ways. Ultimately, Marx argues, recognizing complexity and asking the right questions is essential to bringing light and accountability to the darker, more iniquitous corners of our emerging surveillance society--Provided by publisher

"A River Through Illinois, a collaboration by journalist Gary Marx and photographer Daniel Overturf, carries readers down the 330 miles of the Illinois Waterway, from the urban landscape of Chicago to the state's most rural areas. Combining literary impressions, history, and personal narrative with stunning color photographs, this remarkable book transports readers to places most have never been: three hundred feet below the city of Chicago to a wastewater pump station, above the Illinois River to a lift-bridge operator's hut, and into the wheelhouse of a towboat pushing twenty thousand tons of steel and grain

This study is part of the University of California's Five Year Study of Anti-Semitism in the United States. As a result of the outbreak of black rioting during the summer of 1964, it was decided to expand the proposed black sub-sample of the national sample to a larger Black over-sample in order to study the climate and opinion in the black American community. These black respondents were selected by five samples (492 respondents): one general metropolitan sample and four urban samples from Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and Birmingham. Questions were asked about the respondents' present economic and social positions as well as their childhood positions. The climate of opinion of civil rights issues as well as the attitudes toward authority and treatment of blacks in the existing system were investigated. A section of the questionnaire is devoted to the respondents' attitudes toward Jews and other groups. The investigator wishes to be notified of uses of these data and the publications which result from their analysis. Therefore, when requesting this study, please indicate the user and use of the study at that time
