Experiences in language : tools and techniques for language arts methods by Walter T Petty( Book )

The language arts are the core of the elementary school program, and effective teaching of both the expressive and receptive language arts provides the foundation for learning in all areas. It is vital to the entire program of the school. One does not acquire learning without reading and listening, nor is that learning communicated without speaking and writing. The language arts are not only intertwined, but are basic to learning itself. This text emphasizes the integration of the language arts into all areas of the curriculum, explains the specific skills needed in each area, suggests a sequence for teaching these skills, and gives activities that establish and reinforce these skills

Slithery snakes and other aids to children's writing by Walter T Petty( Book )

9 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 493 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is based on a simple concept: that children can and should be taught many of the aspects of creative writing heretofore largely reserved for adults. Aimed at teachers who want to help children learn to write, the opening chapters present general material on creativity and writing. The third chapter itemizes a stimulating smorgasbord of ideas as prompts, while chapter four discusses the writer's materials: words, sentences, writing forms, and organizing a story. The fifth chapter treats of the writer's tools: alliteration, metaphor, analogy, etc. Many ideas are presented for developing these tools in the hands of the novice writer
The language arts in elementary schools by Walter T Petty( Book )

9 editions published between 1962 and 1968 in English and held by 480 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book, although addressed directly to the teacher, avoids excessive theorizing and offers numerous suggestions on the philosophy of language and its effects on the content of the language program in the different grades. The author understands the problem of creating an atmosphere in the classroom to stimulate a correct expression of language, while suggesting practical methods by which the most effective principles of emotion, learning, and evaluation can be applied in the formation of socially good language habits. This volume presents a program and procedure designed to promote the effective development of language expression habits as a means of communicating effectively with others

The state of the knowledge about the teaching of vocabulary by Walter T Petty( Book )

9 editions published between 1967 and 1968 in English and held by 250 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Research on the teaching of vocabulary was collected, and the validity of such information was examined to identify successful applications of the teaching of vocabulary in schools. Sources bearing on the subject of this study were investigated in detail. The initial surveying and report reading led to the securing of 80 studies that were particularly pertinent to this project. The search was limited to studies dealing directly with pedogogical method, with the teaching of vocabulary as opposed to the acquiring of vocabulary by native speakers of the language. The report also included discussions on an overview of vocabulary teaching, a review of selected studies, linguistic considerations, and research design. The investigators reluctantly concluded from the sources reviewed that "the teaching profession seems to know little of substance about the teaching of vocabulary." They credit the studies with showing that some teaching effort causes students to learn vocabulary more successfully than does no teaching effort, but state they have not demonstrated to the satisfaction of the investigators that any one particular method is better than any other. It was recommended that future research take psycholinguistics into account for research clues in the study of methodology. (Al)
