Cheyenne autumn by
Mari Sandoz(
Book
)
66 editions published between 1941 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 1,705 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In 1878 a band of two hundred and seventy-eight Northern Cheyennes under two chiefs, Little Wolf and Dull Knife, fled from the Oklahoma reservation where the government had taken them and set out for their homeland in Montana some 1,500 miles away. The facts of this long flight are incredible. Counting men and boys, the Cheyennes had perhaps one hundred warriors; the remainder were women and children. A hunting people, they were half-starved from months of enforced encampment. They had few guns, little ammunition, insufficient horses. Their path lay northwest up the corridor of the Great Plains -- by then a settled country dotted with homesteads and towns, criss-crossed by three railroads, and strongly garrisoned by the United States Army. The troops which initially set out to bring the Indians back thought it would require little more than a few days' march and some brief skirmishes. But they, and the following contingents, did not reckon with the Cheyennes' determination or shrewdness. Soon every military post on the Great Plains was altered, and eventually more than 10,000 men under General Crook were in hot pursuit. Still the Indians outwitted and outfought them. Against troops waiting up and down the line of the Union Pacific and the Platte, they made an extraordinary nighttime crossing at Ogllala, and seemed almost to have won home. Then their luck turned. Winter set in, the band split up, exhaustion and dissension began to take their toll. For most of the Indians the flight ended in massacre and tragedy. Only a remnant reached their home in Yellowstone. This is the amazing story that Mari Sandoz re-creates -- a story of adventure, courage, of great hardship and almost unbelievable fortitude. It is authentic all the way through, filled with details of Indian life that Mari Sandoz has gathered from a life-long study of the Cheyennes. She takes you into their camps and reveals the personalities, the daily events, the disputes, and the heart-sickening suffering. And she brings brilliantly to the fore an epic event of our history -- the struggle of a small band of persecuted people against the military powers of an entire nation -- Book jacket

In 1867 conservative estimates put the number of buffaloes in the trans-Missouri region at fifteen million. By the end of the 1880s, that figure had dwindled to a few hundred. The destruction of the great herds is the theme of The Buffalo Hunters. Mari Sandoz's vast canvas is charged with color and excitement-accounts of Indian ambushes, hairbreadth escapes, gambling and gunfights, military expeditions, and famous frontier characters such as Wild Bill Hickok, Lonesome Charlie Reynolds, Buffalo Bill, Sheridan, Custer, and Indian chiefs Whistler, Yellow Wolf, Spotted Tail, and Sittin

Sandhill Sundays and other recollections by
Mari Sandoz(

""No one in our time wrote better than the late Mari Sandoz did, or with more authority and grace, about as many aspects of the Old West," said John K. Hutchens. The proof of that is in her powerful re-creation of pioneer days in the Sandhills of northwestern Nebraska in these autobiographical pieces written between 1929 and 1965. Those who have not read her classic Old Jules (1935) will find Sandhill Sundays and Other Recollections a colorful introduction to Sandoz Country, and those who have will look for the same landmarks and unforgettable people. They include the Sandoz patriarch, the fiery libertarian Old Jules; Marlizzie, the archetypal pioneer woman who was Mari's mother; siblings, chums, neighbors, homesteaders, and Indians, all individualized and defined by a harsh and lonely frontier. Dangers in every form--blizzards, fires, rattlesnakes, murderous men--are described, and, just as vividly, so are the pleasures afforded by country cooking, storytelling, pet animals, and the first phonograph for miles around. Even when she strays, as in the final piece, "Outpost in New York," Mari Sandoz never leaves the Sandhills in spirit. Included are a chronology of her career, a checklist of her writings, and a brief introduction by Virginia Faulkner"--Publisher's website

Crazy Horse : the strange man of the Oglalas : a biography by
Mari Sandoz(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 718 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
One of the best known, least known names and personalities in American history, Crazy Horse has been glamorized or demonized in countless movies. But it was Mari Sandoz, born not far from where Crazy Horse was born and author of nearly two dozen books of western history, biography and fiction, who first told the true story of the military leader of the Oglala Sioux. To tell his story, Mari Sandoz deliberately attempts to imitate the Indian oral tradition. She uses "the simplest words possible, hoping by idiom and figures and the underlying rhythm pattern to say some of the things of the Indians for which there are no white-man words." The result has been called a masterpiece of lyrical brilliance, a tour de force of language and style. It is an unforgettable work about an unforgotten man. --from Amazon.com

Slogum House "lay on the winter flat of Oxbow like the remains of some great, hulking animal that had foraged the region long ago, leaving its old gray carcass to dry and bleach at the foot of the hogback." Ruled by Gulla Slogum, the house was headquarters for a clan that terrorized what it couldn't seduce or steal. Using her daughter as poisoned bait and her sons as predators, Gulla plotted to put a whole county under her control. She had been insulted too often and worked too hard; now she sought power, land, and revenge.--From Amazon
