Rationale of the dirty joke : an analysis of sexual humor by
G Legman(
Book
)
60 editions published between 1968 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 872 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Why do people tell dirty jokes' And what is it about a joke's dirtiness that makes it funny' G. Legman was perhaps the foremost scholar of the dirty joke, and as legions of humor writers and comedians know, his Rationale of the Dirty Joke remains the most exhaustive and authoritative study of the subject. More than two thousand jokes and folktales are presented, covering such topics as The Female Fool, The Fortunate Fart, Mutual Mismatching, and The Sex Machine. These folk texts are authentically transcribed in their innocent and sometimes violent entirety. Legman studies each for its historical and socioanalytic significance, revealing what these jokes mean to the people who tell them and to the people who listen and laugh. Here -- back in print -- is the definitive text for comedians and humor writers, Freudian scholars and late night television enthusiasts. Rationale of the Dirty Joke will amuse you, offend you, challenge you, and disgust you, all while demonstrating the intelligence and hilarity of the dirty joke

The seventeen hundred examples gather here stem, about one-third, from some twenty printed sources dating from 1870 to 1952, most of which duplicate each other to a great extent. The rest are principally from three oral collections, made in Ann Arbor, Michigan (MS. 1938-1941), in Berkeley, California (1942-1947), and in New York (1941-1952)...."--"Sources," page xii

King Turd by
Alfred Jarry(
Book
)
6 editions published between 1953 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
When it first opened in Paris in late 1896, Ubu Roi immediately outraged audiences with its scatological references and surrealist style. Spectators rioted during the premiere (and final) performance and unrelenting controversy over the play's meaning followed. The quality and stunning impact of the work, however, was never questioned. Early drafts of the play were written by Jarry in his teens to ridicule one of his teachers. The farce was done in the form of stylised burlesque, satirising the tendency of the successful bourgeois to abuse his authority and become irresponsibly complacent. Ubu -- the cruel, gluttonous, and grotesque main character (the author's metaphor for modern man) -- anticipated characteristics of the Dada movement. In the 1920s, Dadaists and Surrealists championed the play, recognising Ubu Roi as the first absurdist drama
