Presidential courage : brave leaders and how they changed America, 1789-1989 by Michael R Beschloss( Book )

15 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 2,799 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Presidential historian Beschloss has brought us a saga about crucial times in America's history when a courageous president dramatically changed the future of the United States. Beschloss brings to life these flawed, complex men--and their wives, families, friends and foes, in an intimate, behind-the-scenes view of presidents coping with the supreme dilemmas of their lives. As he shows, none of these presidents was eager to incur ridicule, vilification or threats of political destruction and even assassination. But in the end, bolstered by friends and family, hidden private beliefs and, sometimes, religious faith, each ultimately proved himself to be, in Andrew Jackson's words, "born for the storm."--Publisher description
Jacqueline Kennedy : historic conversations on life with John F. Kennedy, interviews with Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., 1964 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis( Recording )

10 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 2,562 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Shortly after President John F. Kennedy's assassination, with a nation deep in mourning and the world looking on in stunned disbelief, Jacqueline Kennedy found the strength to set aside her own personal grief for the sake of posterity and begin the task of documenting and preserving her husband's legacy. In January of 1964, she and Robert F. Kennedy approved a planned oral-history project that would capture their first-hand accounts of the late President as well as the recollections of those closest to him throughout his extraordinary political career. For the rest of her life, the famously private Jacqueline Kennedy steadfastly refused to discuss her memories of those years, but beginning that March, she fulfilled her obligation to future generations of Americans by sitting down with historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., and recording an astonishingly detailed and unvarnished account of her experiences and impressions as the wife and confidante of John F. Kennedy. The tapes of those sessions were then sealed and later deposited in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum upon its completion, in accordance with Mrs. Kennedy's wishes

At the highest levels : the inside story of the end of the cold war by Michael R Beschloss( Book )

30 editions published between 1993 and 2016 in English and Turkish and held by 1,676 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a story that you did not read in the newspapers. At the Highest Levels reveals a hitherto secret dimension of the most momentous event of our time: the end of the Cold War. Beschloss and Talbott show us the vital transactions that George Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev made and concealed from the world: Bush's pledge not to press Gorbachev for Baltic independence, the manipulations for German unification, how the Soviet Union joined the Gulf War Coalition, Bush's private warnings to Gorbachev that he was about to be overthrown, and the U.S. president's secret efforts to prevent the breakup of the Soviet Union and keep Gorbachev in power." "From early in 1989, the two prizewinning authors were granted unprecedented access to classified U.S. and Soviet documents, cables, telephone transcripts, and diplomatic records, on the condition that they not publish the information before the end of 1992. Such was their access that in the final days before the Soviet Union's collapse, as they relate in this book, Beschloss and Talbott were asked by a Gorbachev confidant to convey to President Bush a private message about Gorbachev's fate under Boris Yeltsin." "With novelistic detail and intimacy, At the Highest Levels shows Bush and Gorbachev behind closed doors as they fence with domestic foes and suspicious allies. It demonstrates how the two leaders came to believe that their most dangerous opponents were no longer each other but forces inside their own countries. As Beschloss and Talbott argue, the two leaders' excessive reliance on each other contributed to Gorbachev's fall from power in December 1991 and Bush's own collapse less than a year later."--Jacket

"Reaching for Glory is a mesmerizing journey into the inner psychological and emotional life of a frightened, lonely, driven, suspicious man. The Johnson of the secret tapes sees hidden enemies all around him. Disloyal aides are flirting with his nemesis, Senator Robert Kennedy. In Johnson's conspiratorial mind, Communists are behind the Vietnam demonstrations on college campuses. The Soviet Ambassador is manipulating U.S. Senators to oppose the war.
