The art of administration by Kenneth E Eble( Book )

20 editions published between 1978 and 1992 in English and Spanish and held by 1,159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Requirements for effective academic administration are considered. The focus is upon how administrators deal with their day-to-day tasks of working with faculty members and students. Administrative skills, attitudes, and qualities that can make the difference between an effective educational environment and one that is demoralized and adrift are discussed. Suggestions are made concerning using time efficiently, communicating with faculty, ways to increase job satisfaction, methods of getting the most from other people, and how to exercise authority diplomatically. The ways administrators can develop their leadership qualities, make sound faculty appointments, arrive at wise and timely decisions, and delegate authority with confidence are considered. A sense of how the ideas of leadership and service can be combined in academic administration and the way that administrators can contribute to the overall institutional goals of teaching, research, and public service are addressed. The book is directed toward all administrators who work with faculty--particularly department heads, chairpersons, deans, and divisional administrators--and to faculty members who are curious about administrative duties or considering an administrative position. The aims of college teaching by Kenneth E Eble( Book )

18 editions published between 1983 and 1999 in English and Japanese and held by 980 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aims of college teaching are discussed, and a comparison of higher education in 1960 and two decades later is provided. After considering the development of a teaching style and the importance of the teacher's character, the joyful and spontaneous side of teaching are considered. The nature of teaching (I.E., art, science, or craft) is also explored. Additional topics include: problems resulting from narrow specialization and the separation of scholarly work from teaching; the goals that teachers should work toward in the areas of teaching, research, and service; the place that knowledge occupies in modern society; the role of values in teaching; and how teachers can aid the total personal development of their students. The following seven sins of teaching are also addressed: arrogance, dullness, rigidity, insensitivity, vanity, self-indulgence, and hypocrisy. The reasons many faculty development programs fail to improve teaching are identified, and suggestions are offered to administrators and chairpersons on how to make college teaching more worthwhile. Perspectives on Alfred North Whitehead's book, "The Aims of Education," are also offered. Attention is directed to four traditional aims of American higher education. A bibliography is appended. (Sw)
Improving undergraduate education through faculty development by Kenneth E Eble( Book )

10 editions published between 1985 and 1986 in English and held by 890 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Faculty development programs in different types of colleges are considered, along with support of faculty development by private foundations, including the Bush Foundation's Faculty Development Program. The evolution of faculty development in institutions in the United States is traced, with emphasis on efforts in the last 15 years. A literature review covers various developmental activities (instructional, curricular, and organizational). Descriptions are provided of faculty development programs at 18 private and 12 public colleges and universities; 2 small and 3 medium-sized liberal arts colleges; 2 selective and church-related liberal arts colleges; and 2 large public universities. The effectiveness of faculty development programs is analyzed from a number of perspectives. Faculty members are examined across the sample of institutions using a questionnaire circulated to a random sample of the entire faculty cohort. Evaluation methods are described in detail, and difficulties encountered in program evaluation are identified. A step-by-step evaluation of a faculty leave program is provided as an example. Trends in faculty development and ways to build programs constructively in the future are addressed, with attention to improving undergraduate education. The faculty questionnaire is appended. (Sw)

The recognition and evaluation of teaching by Kenneth E Eble( Book )

13 editions published between 1970 and 1974 in English and held by 532 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph brings together information and ideas about the recognition and evaluation of effective teaching in the college and university. The materials were gathered in 4 ways: (1) a search of the literature; (2) solicitation of information about systematic attempts to recognize and evaluate teaching: (3) visits to individual campuses and discussion of evaluation as part of these visits; and (4) a conference on April 10, 1970 in Washington, D.C. in which major issues and problems concerning this topic were discussed by students, faculty and administrators from a wide range of institutions. Chapter 1 discusses the need to improve college teaching, some of the reasons why teaching is neglected in favor of research, shaping of professional values, and the place of evaluation. Chapter 2 deals with ways of evaluating teacher effectiveness. Instruments and procedures for student evaluation of effective teaching are discussed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 deals with the impact of student evaluation on the improvement of teaching, and Chapter 5 discusses the role of student evaluation in faculty review and advancement. Documents relating relevant experiences at individual universities, student evaluation forms, and a bibliography conclude the report. (Af)

Career development of the effective college teacher by Kenneth E Eble( Book )

6 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document involved gathering and studying information and visiting some 70 colleges and universities to talk with students, faculty, and administrators concerning career development of the effective college teachers. In addition, an informal national survey of systematic efforts being made to improve teachers' career development was conducted. The results were almost totally negative. In light of this, this document considers the problems and possibilities of career development as they appear in relation to individual needs and aspirations at various stages in a career and to the characteristics and aims of ccolleges and universities. Chapter seven deals with special problems of the community colleges, the predominantly black colleges, and the careers of academic women. Other chapters concern preparing college teachers, the beginning teachers, the reward system, and leadership. A selective bibliography is included. (Author/PG)
