"Byrd was a prominent court composer but also a Catholic. Considering both sacred and secular music and both vocal and instrumental traditions, Brett's essays provide an intimate glimpse into what was unique about Byrd and his music. The selection offered here ranges from the report of Brett's findings on the Paston manuscripts to an unpublished roundtable paper that he delivered a few months before this untimely death, and features his monograph-length study of Byrd's magnum opus, Gradualia."--Jacket

Das wohltemperierte Clavier by Johann Sebastian Bach( Recording )

12 editions published between 1988 and 2000 in 4 languages and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As a young pianist, András Schiff earned wide esteem for his 1980s recordings of the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach; in recent years, as part of his long-term relationship with ECM, he has gone back to Bach as a sage veteran, earning more acclaim for his New Series recordings of the Goldberg Variations (2001) and the Six Partitas (2007). The New York Times said, "Mr. Schiff is, in Bach, a phenomenon. He doesn't so much perform it as emit, breathe it." In August 2011, Schiff turned his focus to the 48 preludes and fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier, making studio recordings of both books in the Auditorium Radiosvizzera Italiana, Lugano. An iconic inspiration for composers from Mozart and Beethoven to Chopin and Brahms and beyond, The Well-Tempered Clavier has long been considered the Old Testament of the keyboard literature (with Beethoven's piano sonatas as the New Testament).
The art of fugue : Bach fugues for keyboard, 1715-1750 by Joseph Kerman( Book )

9 editions published between 2005 and 2016 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a series of essays, musicologist Joseph Kerman discusses his favorite Bach keyboard fugues - some of them among the best-known fugues and others much less familiar. Kerman reveals the inner workings of these pieces, linking the form of the fugues with their many different characters and expressive qualities, and illuminating what makes them particularly beautiful, powerful, and moving." "These pieces, addressed to musical amateurs as well as to specialists and students, are augmented by a CD with new performances made specially for this volume. In addition to complete scores for all the music discussed in the book, the CD features Karen Rosenak, piano, playing two preludes and fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier - C Major, book I; and B Major, book 2 - and recordings by Davitt Moroney of the Fughetta in C Major, BWV 952, on clavichord; the Fugue on "Jesus Christus unser Heiland," BWV 689, on organ; and the Fantasy and Fugue in A Minor, BWV 904, on harpsichord."--BOOK JACKET
