Available light : anthropological reflections on philosophical topics by
Clifford Geertz(
Book
)
30 editions published between 2000 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this collection of essays, Clifford Geertz explores the nature of his anthropological work in relation to a broader public, serving as the foremost spokesperson of his generation of scholars, those who came of age after World War II. Geertz, who once considered a career in philosophy, begins by explaining how he got swept into the revolutionary movement of symbolic anthropology. At that point, his work began to encompass not only the ethnography of groups in Southeast Asia and North Africa, but also the study of how meaning is made in all cultures--or, to use his phrase, to explore the "frames of meaning" in which people everywhere live out their lives. His philosophical orientation helped him to establish the role of anthropology within broader intellectual circles and led him to address the work of such leading thinkers as Charles Taylor, Thomas Kuhn, William James, and Jerome Bruner. In this volume, Geertz comments on their work as he explores questions in political philosophy, psychology, and religion that have intrigued him throughout his career but that now hold particular relevance in light of postmodernist thinking and multiculturalism. Available Light offers discussions of concepts such as nation, identity, country, and self, with a reminder that like symbols in general, their meanings are not categorically fixed but grow and change through time and place

Islam observed; religious development in Morocco and Indonesia by
Clifford Geertz(
Book
)
51 editions published between 1968 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 1,461 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Mr. Geertz begins his argument by outlining the problem conceptually and providing an overview of the two countries. He then traces the evolution of their classical religious styles which, with disparate settings and unique histories, produced strikingly different spiritual climates. So in Morocco, the Islamic conception of life came to mean activism, moralism, and intense individuality, while in Indonesia the same concept emphasized aestheticism, inwardness, and the radical dissolution of personality. In order to assess the significance of these interesting developments, Mr. Geertz sets forth a series of theoretical observations concerning the social role of religion. -- Back cover

Works and lives : the anthropologist as author by
Clifford Geertz(
Book
)
56 editions published between 1889 and 2010 in English and Spanish and held by 1,276 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Life among the anthros and other essays by
Clifford Geertz(
)
19 editions published between 2001 and 2012 in English and held by 1,212 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Clifford Geertz (1926-2006) was perhaps the most influential anthropologist of our time, but his influence extended far beyond his field to encompass all facets of contemporary life. Nowhere were his gifts for directness, humor, and steady revelation more evident than in the pages of the New York Review of Books, where for nearly four decades he shared his acute vision of the world in all its peculiarity. This book brings together the finest of Geertz's review essays from the New York Review along with a representative selection of later pieces written at the height of his powers, some that first appeared in periodicals such as Dissent, others never before published. This collection exemplifies Geertz's extraordinary range of concerns, beginning with his first essay for the Review in 1967, in which he reviews, with muffled hilarity, the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. This book includes Geertz's unflinching meditations on Western academia's encounters with the non-Western world, and on the shifting and clashing places of societies in the world generally. Geertz writes eloquently and arrestingly about such major figures as Gandhi, Foucault, and Genet, and on topics as varied as Islam, globalization, feminism, and the failings of nationalism. Life among the Anthros and Other Essays demonstrates Geertz's uncommon wisdom and consistently keen and hopeful humor, confirming his status as one of our most important and enduring public intellectuals." -- Jacket

Meaning and order in Moroccan society : three essays in cultural analysis by
Clifford Geertz(
Book
)
17 editions published between 1969 and 1979 in English and held by 537 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The three essays, independently written and richly armored with tables, figures, and appendices, do not present a common front on Morocco (though at times they tend at least stylistically to appropriate the field). They are all based on intensive anthropological fieldwork in and around a single town, Sefrou, in the foothills of the Middle Atlas mountains. They are united, the authors tell us, by "the view that the systems of meaning, whether highly explicit like Islam or rather less so like hospitality, in terms of which individuals live out their lives constitute what order those lives attain" (p. 6). They are united also-and this constitutes their interest-by a conceptual anguish and a quest for an appropriate set of categories for grasping what to the Westerner appears to be a very elusive, slippery sort of social and cultural reality. -- Review from https://www.jstor.org (Sep. 9, 2016)
