Persuasion : the theory and practice of manipulative communication by George N Gordon( Book )

9 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 671 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Drawing together both the history of persuasion as an historical facet of civilization and current practice, and speculation concerning its many manifestation in modern life, this book attempts to review persuasive communication--interpersonal, social, and mass-oriented--from the influences of society to the influences of the mass media. The first chapters make up a general introduction to the study of the intentional aspects of communication and the history of persuasion. Part two considers logical perspectives--those aspects of persuasion which are mainly historical and analytical in thrust, centering upon how and when persuasion occurs in society and how it is employed in major cultural institutions. The third part centers on psychological perspectives and is largely concerned with discrete processes that persuade people to modify dispositions and change actions. An attempt is made to explain why these modifications may or may not occur according to current psychological theory. Part four examines some contemporary beliefs, ideas, and myths concerning persuasion relevant to matters that are of social, political, and cultural concern to Western civilization. Part five discusses how "futurism" as persuasion may constrict free will and the ramifications for survival in our belief that we are not persuasible. (Author/SH)

Classroom television; new frontiers in ITV by George N Gordon( Book )

17 editions published between 1970 and 1976 in English and held by 443 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author traces the history of instructional television (itv), concluding that classroom television is little more advanced or accepted than it was in 1950. He suggests that there will be an increasing use of videotaped, pre-recorded, inexpensively produced local television lessons in place of broadcast itv. The basics of television production are described, with emphasis on the use of simple and practical equipment wherever possible. The pros and cons of open- and closed-circuit transmission and tape electrography are discussed. He distills the past 20 years of experience with itv and presents a set of general statements about the potential and capabilities of the medium. He attempts to identify what varieties of teaching and learning are possible with itv. Methods for adapting lessons for itv presentation and of developing scripts for new lessons are outlined. The author reviews the manpower necessary for itv production, including technical and production personnel and television teachers, and describes the process of integrating itv lessons into the classroom curriculum. He takes most television research to task on various grounds and presents his own standards for evaluating and validating television research. A glossary is provided. (Jy)
Videocassette technology in American education by George N Gordon( Book )

8 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 352 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The authors take the point of view that the videocassette is an innovative, flexible, and potentially creative tool in the spectrum of educational technology. They distinguish between the cassette and the cartridge and offer advice, counsel, and examples of how both can be used innovatively in the various methodologies and philosophies of educational institutions in America. They explore the relationship of videocassettes to such aspects of education as the new media centers, informal and formal education, the comprehensive high school, open enrollment and the "new college," adult education, and special education for the gifted and the handicapped. Educators and the videocassette industry are cautioned that, while the future appears to be promising, the videocassette's success in improving educational opportunities is by no means assured; many problems, including the most pressing one of lack of equipment compatibility and industry standards, must first be solved.
