A concise history of mathematics by
Dirk J Struik(
Book
)
214 editions published between 1943 and 2013 in 13 languages and held by 3,366 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This compact, wellwritten history? first published in 1948, and now in its fourth revised edition? describes the main trends in the development of all fields of mathematics from the first available records to the middle of the 20th century. Students, researchers, historians, specialists? in short, everyone with an interest in mathematics? will find it engrossing and stimulating. Beginning with the ancient Near East, the author traces the ideas and techniques developed in Egypt, Babylonia, China, and Arabia, looking into such manuscripts as the Egyptian Papyrus Rhind, the Ten Classics of China, and the Siddhantas of India. He considers Greek and Roman developments from their beginnings in Ionian rationalism to the fall of Constantinople; covers medieval European ideas and Renaissance trends; analyzes 17th and 18thcentury contributions; and offers an illuminating exposition of 19th century concepts. Every important figure in mathematical history is dealt with? Euclid, Archimedes, Diophantus, Omar Khayyam, Boethius, Fermat, Pascal, Newton, Leibniz, Fourier, Gauss, Riemann, Cantor, and many others. For this latest edition, Dr. Struik has both revised and updated the existing text, and also added a new chapter on the mathematics of the first half of the 20th century. Concise coverage is given to set theory, the influence of relativity and quantum theory, tensor calculus, the Lebesgue integral, the calculus of variations, and other important ideas and concepts. The book concludes with the beginnings of the computer era and the seminal work of von Neumann, Turing, Wiener, and others. "The author's ability as a firstclass historian as well as an able mathematician has enabled him to produce a work which is unquestionably one of the best."? Nature Magazine

Lectures on analytic and projective geometry by
Dirk J Struik(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1953 and 2014 in English and held by 497 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Based on a historic approach taken by instructors at MIT, this text is geared toward junior and senior undergraduate courses in analytic and projective geometry. Starting with concepts concerning points on a line and lines through a point, it proceeds to the geometry of plane and space, leading up to conics and quadrics developed within the context of metrical, affine, and projective transformations. The algebraic treatment is occasionally exchanged for a synthetic approach, and the connection of the geometrical material with other fields is frequently noted. Prerequisites for this treatment include three semesters of calculus and analytic geometry. Special exercises at the end of the book introduce students to interesting peripheral problems, and solutions are provided

11 editions published in 1934 in English and Italian and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This monograph intends to give a general survey of the different branches of the geometry of linear displacements which so far have received attention', The material on this new type of differential geometry has grown so rapidly in re cent years that it is impossible, not only to be complete, but even to do justice to the work of the different authors, so that a selection had to be made, We hope, however, that enough territory is covered to enable the reader to understand the present state of the theory in the essential points, The author wishes to thank several mathematicians who have helped hirn with remarks and suggestions; especially Dr. J.A. " ... Marx explains how, under capitalism, people rely on labor to live. In the past people could rely on nature itself for their natural needs; in modern society, if one wants to eat, one must work: it is only through money that one may survive. Thus [a person] becomes a slave to his wages. It is only through his work that he can find enough money to continue to live; but he doesn't simply live, he actually only survives, as a worker. Labor is only used to create more wealth, instead of achieving the fulfillment of human nature."
