Quantum electrodynamics and quantum optics by
A. O Barut(
Book
)
16 editions published between 1983 and 1987 in English and held by 277 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The borderline of quantum electrodynamics and quantum optics offer spectacular results and problems concerning the foundations of radiation theory. Perhaps the major new viewpoint that has emerged from recent investigations is that one can now work inside a timedependent quantum process, whereas up to now all elementary quantum processes were either stationary, or one worked with asymptotic inand outstates, i.e. an Smatrix approach. In therirst part of this volume, the Quantum Electrodynamics, the present status of the main approaches to this most accurate of all physical theories are discussed: the Hamiltonian approach, the Green's function approach with particular emphasis to bound state problems, and the newer, nonperturbative approach. The latest numerical results on radiative corrections, Lamb shifts and anomalous magnetic moments are reviewed with new results for high Z atoms. Also discussed are different theoretical interpretations of the radiative phenomena as due to quantized field vacuum fluctuations or due to self energy. A small group of contributions are devoted to the physics and mathematical description of decaying or unstable states in quantum theory. This remarkable phenomenon of quantum theory still needs complete clarification, it is a timedependent phenomenon, which can be described also by asymptotic Smatrix methods, but with complex energies

Groups, systems and manybody physics by
Peter Kramer(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The authors of the present book share the view that groups and semigroups playa funda mental role in the structure of the complex systems which they are studying. A serious effort was made to implement this point of view by presenting the fundamental concepts pertaining to groups and semigroups before going into the various fields of application. The first two chapters are written in this spirit. The following seven chapters deal with groups in relation to specific systems and lead from basic notions to highlevel applications. The systems under study are in all cases characterized by a high degree of complexity as found in the physics of many degrees of freedom and in the theory of automata and systems. In 1977 the authors from the University of Tiibingen (M. Dal Cin, G. John, P. Kramer, A. Rieckers, K. Scheerer and H. Stumpf) organized an International Summer School on Groups and ManyBody Physics. The lectures presented at this School dealt specifically with this interplay of groups and complex systems. The contributions of this book cover the fields which were treated in a condensed form at the Summer School

Selected scientific papers of Alfred Landé by
Alfred Landé(
Book
)
12 editions published between 1987 and 1988 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Theoretical physicists allover the world are acquainted with Lande's celebrated computation of the g factor or splitting factor or, more precisely, the magne togyric factor. The socalled anomalous Zeeman effect had intrigued, if not vexed, some of the most distinguished physicists of that time, such as Bohr, Sommerfeld, Pauli, and others. Lande realized that this recalcitrant effect was inseparable from the multiplet line structure a breakthrough in understanding which he achieved in 1922 at the age of thirty four. It was in the same year that Lande discovered the interval rule for the separation of multiplet sublevels, a significant result that holds in all cases of RussellSaunders coupling and renders comparatively easy the empirical analysis of spectral multiplets. In the twenties, Lande succeeded in constructing some original concepts of axiomatic thermodynamics by employing Caratheodory's somewhat esoteric approach as his guiding concept. Published in the Handbuch der Physik, his comprehensive treatise, evincing several novel ideas, has become a classic. Lande, Sommerfeld's student though never a true disciple, published two monographs on quantum mechanics that are remarkable for their content and exposition. In this connection it may be apposite to stress that Lande had sub scribed for many years to the (infelicitously named) Copenhagen interpretation

Selected scientific papers of E.U. Condon by
Edward Uhler Condon(
Book
)
8 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
E.U. Condon's major contributions were in atomic and molecular physics and spectroscopy; his book with G.H. Shortley on The Theory of Atomic Spectra dominated the field of spectroscopy for half a century and remains an invaluable reference. He also played an important role in the institutions of American science. He served for many years as the editor of Reviews of Modern Physics, and with Hugh Odishaw he edited the still widely used Handbook of Physics. After World War II, Condon became director of the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST), and helped to make it one of the premier research laboratories in the physical sciences in the world. The Selected Scientific Papers reprint many of the most important contributions Condon made to atomic physics, quantum theory, nuclear physics, condensedmatter physics and other fields. The Selected Popular Writings contain articles he wrote on technical topics for such journals as The American Journal of Physics, Science, and Nature, as well as reflections on education, UFO's, and other topics
