On the road to being there : studies in pilgrimage and tourism in late modernity by William H Swatos( )

12 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 1,447 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume consists of a collection of twelve empirical studies that address theoretical and practical issues relating to pilgrimage and tourism activities in late modernity. As a contribution to the "Religion and Social Order" series sponsored by the Association for the Sociology of Religion, these studies are particularly directed to assessing both the role of religion in the pilgrimage/tourism nexus and the ways in which religious expressions have changed as a result of the technological and social changes of late modernity that affect human behavior in a more general sense. The chapters address neo-pagan pilgrimage tours to ancient pagan temples, travels to spiritual healers, the development of historical sites by American religious movements of nineteenth-century origin, labyrinths, pilgrimages that emphasize walking a journey rather than visiting buildings, virtual pilgrimage, the Roman Jubilee of 2000, Kyto's Gion Festival, and similar topics

How prophecy lives by Diana G Tumminia( )

7 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 1,255 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Taking its inspiration from the 50th anniversary of the publication of Festinger et al.'s 1956 seminal and controversial volume "When Prophecy Fails," which introduced the notion of "cognitive dissonance" as an explanation for how a small group of flying saucer devotees handled the failure of a predicted visit from space aliens, this volume looks at both theoretical and empirical studies of religious groups for whom space beings and civilizations provided an inspiration to prepare for the nearness of events that would trigger "the end of the world." Rather than examining merely the rationales adopted to account for the disappointments associated with such "failures," the core of the present volume seeks to explore the dynamics that inspire not only such beliefs but also the vigorous participation in activities in which adherents engage to prepare for the coming of (or transport to) alien civilizations from 'outer space.' The power of religious publics : staking claims in American society( )

6 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 933 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Currently, public religion is in a time of flux and the notion of the common good-once associated with the Protestant voice in America-is openly contested by new religious coalitions seeking to communicate their version of the truth and plant their stake in the public domain. This edited volume reflects on the changing tone and form of the public voice of religion, on its function in American society, and on its relationship to the private world of religion. It proposes that public religion, when exercised in a civil and accountable way, can be a responsible and prophetic voice in public life and enrich the American experiment in liberal democracy. The contributors-first-rate scholars including Martin Marty and Robert Belah-focus on public religion's influence on controversial issues such as multiculturalism, economic inequality, abortion, and homosexuality

Testing pluralism : globalizing belief, localizing gods by Giuseppe Giordan( )

11 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 653 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume of the 'Religion and the Social Order series' examines the phenomenon of the globalization of religions that has particularly characterized the last fifty years. Historically, religions were relatively tightly connected with territoriality. The advent of relatively inexpensive and relatively accessible air transport has made it possible for groups of significant size to move from their original homelands and resettle in new sites. In contrast to predictions associated with secularization theories that dominated the middle of the twentieth century, today we find that the world's religions continue to provide meaning and value in the lives of their adherents. This volume examines at a global level a variety of such groups and their adjustments

"Few areas in American life have experienced as profound a change in structure and mission as religion in this epoch of women's struggle for complete equality and integration. Until recently, few studies have attempted the sort of empirical and theoretical integration that reveals the magnitude of this shift in basic roles, attitudes, and participation in church life and theology." "William H. Swatos, Jr. has assembled a well-designed and carefully defined volume to give the reader a solid, empirical look at this revolution in religious practice and belief. The volume also provides insight into the sharp differences in opinions among women involved in religion; the degree to which women change the structure of liturgy or simply partake of traditions from which they were formerly excluded; the extent to which women increase church involvement in social issues, or retain a classical orientation to preaching; the extent to which gender has an impact on everything from interpersonal relations of clergy with laity to preaching orientations." "There are two distinct elements in Gender and Religion: The first section covers women in religious roles, such as pastors, rabbis, priests, and black female leadership activities. The unifying theme is experiencing and overcoming gender bias in the religious sphere. The second deals with female experiences in childbirth rituals, attitudes toward pluralism, modernity, roles as social change agents, and the influence of religion on the women's movement."--Jacket
