The constitution of society : outline of the theory of structuration by Anthony Giddens( Book )

132 editions published between 1977 and 2013 in 9 languages and held by 1,889 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Anthony Giddens has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade. In The Constitution of Society he outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form. A particular feature is Giddens's concern to connect abstract problems of theory to an interpretation of the nature of empirical method in the social sciences. In presenting his own i
Selected writings by mile Durkheim( Book )

48 editions published between 1972 and 2012 in English and Spanish and held by 1,849 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the only collection of Durkheim's writings to draw upon the whole body of his work. Many of the texts in the book are here translated for the first time. Dr. Giddens takes his selections from a wide variety of sources and includes a number of items from untranslated writings in the Revue Philosophique, Année Sociologique and from L'évolution pedagogue en France. Selections from previously translated writings have been checked against the originals and amended or re-translated where necessary. Dr. Giddens arranges his selections thematically rather than chronologically. However, extracts from all phases of Durkheim's intellectual career are represented, giving the date of their first publication, which makes the evolution of his thought easily traceable. In his introduction Dr. Giddens discusses phases in the interpretation of Durkheim's thought, as well as the main themes in his work, with an analysis of the effects of his thinking on modern sociology. The book is for students at any level taking courses in sociology, social anthropology and social theory, for whom Durkheim is one of the major writers studied
Capitalism and modern social theory : an analysis of the writings of Marx, Durkheim and Max Weber by Anthony Giddens( Book )

126 editions published between 1971 and 2009 in 8 languages and held by 1,832 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Runaway world : how globalization is reshaping our lives by Anthony Giddens( Book )

42 editions published between 1999 and 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,492 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Runaway World, leading social commentator Anthony Giddens shows how globalization impacts every human on earth. Giddens examines the global marketplace, but goes beyond a conventional economic approach to look at more universal issues like family, risk, tradition, and democracy. Runaway World describes how changing currents in the international seas of finance are destabilizing countries, and how most people (and their governments) aren't prepared to deal with an ever-accelerating capitalism and Americanization of culture. Giddens finds the changes largely positive - liberating women, spreading democracy, and creating new wealth - but acknowledges the hazards of so much money crossing so many borders and distant cultures colliding."--Jacket

The transformation of intimacy : sexuality, love, and eroticism in modern societies by Anthony Giddens( Book )

99 editions published between 1992 and 2015 in 12 languages and held by 1,391 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The sexual revolution: an evocative term, but what meaning can be given to it today? How does 'sexuality' come into being and what connections does it have with the changes that have affected personal life on a more general plane? In answering these questions, Anthony Giddens disputes many of the dominant interpretations of the role of sexuality in modern culture. The emergence of what the author calls plastic sexuality - sexuality freed from its intrinsic relation to reproduction - is analysed in terms of the long-term development of the modern social order and social influences of the last few decades. Giddens argues that the transformation of intimacy, in which women have played the major part, holds out the possibility of a radical democratization of the personal sphere." "This book will appeal to a large general audience as well as being essential reading for students and professionals."--Jacket

The politics of climate change by Anthony Giddens( Book )

38 editions published between 2009 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 1,025 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A landmark study in the struggle to contain climate change, the greatest challenge of our era. I urge everyone to read it."--Bill Clinton, 42nd President of the United States of America. Climate change differs from any other problem that, as collective humanity, we face today. If it goes unchecked, the consequences are likely to be catastrophic for human life on earth. Yet for most people, and for many policy-makers too, it is a 'back of the mind' issue. We recognise its importance and even its urgency, but for the most part it is swamped by more immediate concerns. Politicians have woken up to the dangers, but at the moment their responses are mainly on the level of gesture rather than being, as they have to be, both concrete and radical. Political action and intervention, on local, national and international levels, is going to have a decisive effect on whether or not we can limit global warming, as well as how we adapt to that already occurring. At the moment, however, Anthony Giddens argues controversially, we do not have a systematic politics of climate change. Politics-as-usual won't allow us to deal with the problems we face, while the recipes of the main challenger to orthodox politics, the green movement, are flawed at source. Giddens introduces a range of new concepts and proposals to fill in the gap, and examines in depth the connections between climate change and energy security. This book is likely to become a classic in the field. It will appeal to everyone concerned about how we can cope with what amounts to a crisis for our civilisation

Beyond left and right : the future of radical politics by Anthony Giddens( Book )

56 editions published between 1994 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 919 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How should one understand the nature and possibilities of political radicalism today? The political radical is normally thought of as someone who stands on the left, opposing backward-looking conservatism. In the present day, however, the left has turned defensive, while the right has become radical, advocating the free play of market forces no matter what obstacles of tradition or custom stand in their way. What explains such a curious twist of perspective? In answering this question, Giddens develops a new framework for radical politics, drawing on what he calls "philosophic conservatism," but applying this outlook in the service of values normally associated with the left. The ecological crisis is at the core of this analysis, but is understood by Giddens in an unconventional way - as a response to a world in which modernity has run up against its limits as a social and moral order. The end of nature, as an entity existing independently of human intervention, and the end of tradition, combined with the impact of globalization, are the forces which now have to be confronted, made use of and coped with. This book provides a powerful interpretation of the rise of fundamentalism, of democracy, the persistence of gender divisions and the question of a normative political theory of violence. It will be essential reading for anyone seeking a novel approach to the political challenges we face at the turn of the twenty-first century
The third way and its critics by Anthony Giddens( Book )

45 editions published between 1998 and 2013 in 7 languages and held by 834 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The idea of finding a "third way" in politics has become a focus of discussion across the world. Political leaders, in the US, Europe, Asia and Latin America claim to be following its principles. Yet the notion has also attracted much criticism. Some say it is an empty concept without any real content. Critics from the more traditional left argue that it is a betrayal of left-wing ideals. Anthony Giddens's "The Third Way" (Polity Press, 1998) is regarded by many as the key text of third way politics. Translated into 25 languages, it has shaped the development of the third way. In this book, Giddens responds to the critics, and further develops the ideas set out in his earlier volume. Far from being unable to deal with inequalities of wealth and power, he shows, third way politics offers the only feasible approach to these issues
