André Masson and the surrealist self by
Clark V Poling(
Book
)
6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 490 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book examines the attempts of the French Surrealist artist Andre Masson (1896-1987) to define "self" in his art in the period between the early 1920s and 1940, the most fruitful period of classic Surrealism, culminating in the emergence of existentialism. Through a close reading of Masson's paintings, drawings and writings, Clark V. Poling explores the ways in which the artist figured the self - as fragmented, dissolved, merged with other selves and with the natural environment, and, ultimately, reconstituted and consolidated." "Masson's work, Poling argues, reveals his involvement with modern conceptions of the self that he absorbed from Nietzsche and the Surrealist writers, as well as from other sources in philosophy, psychology, psychoanalysis, and ethnography. He examines Masson's articulation of these ideas in paintings and graphic works, using his correspondence from the Surrealist period and his many subsequent writings as supporting evidence."--Jacket

André Masson by
Dawn Ades(
Book
)
18 editions published in 1994 in 3 languages and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Andre Masson (1896-1987) was one of the major early French Surrealist painters. A close friend of Andre Breton, Joan Miro, and Max Ernst, he joined the Surrealist movement in the early 20s, then disassociated with it in the early 30s, focusing instead on the human condition - the fundamental impulses of love and hatred - and reacting to the Spanish Civil War. In the early 40s, Masson moved to America and became interested in mythical imagery. Many of his paintings from this period show a focus on African American and Native American myths, and the style of his expression and brushwork influenced many young American painters. This survey presents the full range of Masson's work, from his Surrealist period to the later, more mythical subjects. Dawn Ades's text provides an authoritative and thoughtful introduction to the ideas behind Masson's work

Martinique : snake charmer by
André Breton(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In 1941, as the Vichy regime consolidated its control of France, Andre Breton left the country for the island of Martinique. A poet and the principal founder of surrealism, Breton did not stay long, but his visit inspired the essays and poems of this book. Martinique: Snake Charmer is one of surrealism's most important texts, and it has been called "the most beautiful of all books" about the island. (Martinique: Snake Charmer also includes nine evocative drawings by the surrealist Andre Masson, a companion of Breton's during his stay on the island.) First collected into a single volume in 1948 and in print in France ever since, this is the first English translation of a work that, in series editor Franklin Rosemont's view, seeks "not merely to question the dogmas and platitudes of so-called common sense and 'established facts, ' but to deviate from them, absolutely, in an imaginative quest for new and untried solutions to society's gravest problems.""--Jacket

Mirror of the marvelous : the classic surrealist work on myth by
Pierre Mabille(
Book
)
1 edition published in 1998 in English and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Mirror of the Marvelous has long been considered one of the most significant and original books to have come out of the surrealist movement. Anais Nin suggested it as a source of inspiration, far ahead of its time, for would-be authors seeking to break from the realist literary mold. Mabille cites a far reaching assortment of texts, ranging from the classic to the obscure, from the ancient epic to the modern poem, from the creation myth to more contemporary visions of apocalypse. This work defines the flame of the marvelous by showing its presence in those works where it burns the brightest. -- Publishers description
