Literature for today's young adults by Kenneth L Donelson( Book )

53 editions published between 1980 and 2014 in English and held by 2,574 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With 140 fewer pages than the fourth edition, the fifth obviously has been tightened; it's partly in the format, with narrower margins and less white space. Otherwise, some text has been rephrased or rearranged and topics (for example, adolescent psychology) given shorter shrift. Coverage of Holocaust literature has been expanded, and discussion of problem novels improved. Sports books have been dumped in with humor, movies, and other stuff, including humorous poetry, which, it seems, the authors feel is the only kind teens read for pleasure; other types of poetry as well as short stories and drama are relegated to the English classroom, coverage of which has been enlarged. The chapter on sf and fantasy is good on historical aspects but weak on today's writers. A short list of Internet listserves and Web sites has been incorporated as part of using YA literature in the library. Once again, updating of appendixes seems spotty. Nevertheless, this is useful as a resource for youth librarians and a tool for teaching YA literature. Sally Estes

Dust in our desks : territory days to the present in Arizona schools by Alleen Pace Nilsen( Book )

2 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The history of Arizona public schooling had a modest beginning in 1864 when the first Territorial Legislature allotted $1,500 to five existing mission schools. The third territorial governor, Anson P. K. Safford, launched a crusade to establish public schools, and by 1877 there were 28. The 1885 Legislature authorized the founding of a Territorial Normal School at Tempe and a university at Tuscon. By 1900 Arizona had 428 public schools. The major accomplishment of the early 1900s was the establishment of high schools. During the 1920s and 1930s the first junior colleges were founded, and school consolidation halved the number of one-teacher schools in the state. After World War ii, Arizona experienced tremendous growth, and the sudden influx of students created new problems for boards of education. Between 1960 and 1985, federal monies became a factor in local school district funding, and the number of schools continued to grow, reaching 861 public schools and 484 private schools and preschools by 1980. This collection contains historical overviews, many old photographs, and 114 personal reminiscences about memorable educators, teaching and education experiences in small rural schools, the inauguration of "modern" schools and educational innovations, and the particular experiences of pioneers, Blacks, Mexican-Americans, and Japanese American World War ii internees. Changing words in a changing world by Alleen Pace Nilsen( Book )

4 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 41 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The course materials provided in this booklet are intended to create an awareness of the pervasiveness of sexism in American culture as reflected in the language. Information on the topic; assignments for field work, analysis, and discussion; and topics for compositions are given in four sections, each based on a separate linguistic principle. The first section, based on the principle that a language reflects the culture and values of its speakers, includes discussions of names of people, place names, language customs and weddings, and marriage and people's names. The second section, based on the principle that language forms reflect the viewpoint of the majority or the powerful groups in society, includes discussions of language in relation to aging, the pronoun problem, and the problem with the word "man." The third section is based on the principle that exaggeration is an integral part of the communication process and discusses metaphors and symbolization, presuppositions about females and males, and exaggeration for commercial purposes. The final section, based on the principle that language changes continuously but in different ways with different speakers, provides materials on historical changes in English about males and females and planned changes in English in relation to females and males. Finally antonymy, synonymy, paraphrase, and language universals are discussed in the light of various semantic theories. (Am)
Changing words in a changing world : instructor's guide by Alleen Pace Nilsen( Book )

2 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The course described in this teacher's guide is intended to create an awareness of the pervasiveness of sexism in American culture as reflected in the language. Following an overview of the course, the guide provides a discussion of teaching methods that have proven useful in pilot studies of the course, including the following topics: introduction to linguistic principles; illustrations of linguistic principles; field work, analysis, and discussion; small group activities; supplementary field work; the keeping of a journal; and ways to grade. The course is based on four linguistic principles and the guide discusses each of the principles: (1) a language reflects the culture and values of its speakers; (2) language forms reflect the viewpoint of the majority or the powerful groups in a society; (3) exaggeration is an integral part of the communication process; and (4) language changes continuously, but in different ways with different speakers. For each principle there are activities and assignments with sexist examples provided, suggestions for relevant composition topics, and examples for supplementary discussion topics. (Mkm)
